IHI Power Services’ Anthony Miles Honored With NAEM Leadership in Action Award for Advancing Safety and Culture Across Power Industry
IHI Power Services Corp. (IPSC), a premier provider of operations and maintenance, asset management, technical, and compliance services for the power generation sector, proudly announces that Anthony Miles, its Director of Health and Safety, has been recognized as the 2025 recipient of the National Association for Environmental Management (NAEM) Leadership in Action Award. This distinguished award celebrates environmental, health, safety, and sustainability (EHS&S) professionals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, innovation, and measurable impact in promoting organizational excellence and cultivating a strong, sustainable culture.
Miles brings more than 25 years of expertise in EHS&S, with experience across coal, biomass, natural gas, and renewable energy facilities. He is widely recognized for his “people-first” philosophy, transforming safety from a procedural obligation into a deeply rooted organizational commitment. At the heart of his approach lies a simple yet powerful belief: safety is fundamentally about protecting lives. Miles emphasizes the importance of proactive action, shared responsibility, and cultivating a mindset where every employee looks out for one another, creating a culture that extends beyond compliance to genuine care and engagement.
“Anthony has elevated IPSC’s safety performance while fostering a culture of shared stewardship throughout our organization,” said Tony Dabbene, IPSC’s Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer. “Through his leadership, our employees feel empowered to speak up, intervene when necessary, and ensure that every individual returns home safely at the end of the day. Anthony’s expertise, dedication, and compassion exemplify the profound impact a true culture of care can achieve.”
Under Miles’ guidance, IPSC has achieved remarkable improvements in safety outcomes and employee engagement across its nationwide portfolio of nearly 40 power generation facilities. Since 2024, the company’s total recordable incident rate (TRIR) has been reduced to 0.60, a substantial improvement over the industry benchmark of 1.7. This achievement reflects not only Miles’ technical acumen but also his strategic approach to embedding safety into every aspect of operations.
A key component of this success is the behavior-based observation program implemented under Miles’ direction. The program encourages employees to proactively identify and address safety risks, driving over 750 safety interventions per month. This initiative reinforces accountability, situational awareness, and collaboration at every organizational level, promoting a culture where safety is viewed not as a set of rules but as an ongoing, collective responsibility.
“This award is a reflection of the exceptional team at IPSC,” said Miles. “Our employees consistently step up to look out for one another, share valuable lessons, and engage with new safety initiatives. I’m grateful for the recognition, but what truly matters is how our programs—from behavior-based observations to companywide safety campaigns—have empowered our people to take ownership of safety and integrate it into everything we do.”
Miles has championed numerous initiatives aimed at standardizing safety practices across IPSC’s diverse portfolio of plants. Recognizing the unique challenges presented by different fuel types and ownership structures, he has implemented consistent, companywide training programs designed to enhance technical competence, situational awareness, and collaborative problem-solving. This approach ensures that employees, regardless of location or role, are equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to maintain high safety standards.
In addition to training, Miles has expanded IPSC’s corporate safety department to provide greater oversight, guidance, and support across all facilities. His leadership emphasizes transparency and communication, with weekly companywide safety messages, bi-monthly campaigns, and regional engagement sessions that invite employees to share insights, voice concerns, and actively participate in shaping the company’s safety culture. These initiatives have strengthened operational consistency, accountability, and engagement, proving that when technical expertise is combined with human-centered leadership, lasting improvements in safety performance are possible.
Miles’ contributions extend beyond operational excellence to influencing organizational culture. By prioritizing open dialogue and shared responsibility, he has cultivated an environment where employees feel valued and heard. This emphasis on collaboration and mutual respect has fostered trust across IPSC’s workforce, encouraging proactive participation and reinforcing the notion that safety is a collective endeavor rather than a top-down mandate.
Industry peers and colleagues alike have praised Miles’ approach for its balance of technical rigor and empathy. His leadership demonstrates that safety programs are most effective when they inspire genuine engagement rather than merely ensuring compliance. By aligning organizational goals with employee well-being, Miles has created a blueprint for sustainable safety practices that other organizations can emulate.
As the 2025 recipient of NAEM’s Leadership in Action Award, Miles joins a select group of EHS&S professionals recognized for their transformative impact on workplace safety and sustainability. The award underscores IPSC’s ongoing commitment to operational excellence and the prioritization of human life in the power generation industry—a commitment that has tangible benefits for employees, communities, and the broader energy sector.
Looking forward, Miles continues to explore innovative approaches to further enhance safety and operational performance at IPSC. From leveraging data-driven insights to refining training methods and expanding engagement programs, his vision reflects a forward-thinking approach to integrating safety, sustainability, and employee empowerment into the core of IPSC’s operations.
