Iberdrola Reports Strong Growth in Electricity Distribution and Generation Capacity in First Half of 2026
Iberdrola delivered robust operational performance during the first half of 2026, benefiting from accelerating electrification trends and growing electricity demand across its international markets. The global energy company reported a significant increase in electricity distributed, expanded its generation portfolio, and recorded higher power production, reinforcing its position as one of the world’s leading utilities in renewable energy and electricity networks.
The company announced that electricity distributed across its networks increased by 6.3% year-on-year during the first six months of 2026, reaching a total of 136,648 gigawatt hours (GWh). The growth reflects the continued electrification of economies and increased demand for electricity in all the countries where the group operates.
Electrification Drives Network Growth
The ongoing shift toward electrification has become a major growth engine for utilities worldwide, and Iberdrola is among the companies benefiting most from this trend. Rising adoption of electric vehicles, increasing industrial electrification, and growing electricity consumption from residential and commercial sectors contributed to the increase in distributed power volumes.
The company reported growth across all its operating regions, highlighting the broad-based nature of demand recovery and energy transition initiatives. Among these markets, the United Kingdom recorded the most significant increase, with electricity distributed rising by 32.6%.
This exceptional growth was largely supported by the integration of Electricity North West into Iberdrola’s operations, significantly expanding the company’s network footprint in the British market. The acquisition has strengthened Iberdrola’s presence in the United Kingdom and enhanced its ability to support the country’s decarbonization and electrification objectives.
The strong performance in electricity distribution demonstrates the increasing importance of network investments as economies transition toward cleaner energy systems. Expanding and modernizing power grids remain essential to accommodate rising renewable energy penetration and increased electricity consumption.
Generation Capacity Continues to Expand
Alongside growth in electricity distribution, Iberdrola significantly expanded its generation portfolio during the reporting period. Total installed generation capacity increased by nearly 4% compared with the previous year, reaching 56,827 megawatts (MW).
The company added approximately 2,300 MW of new generation capacity over the past twelve months, further strengthening its diversified renewable energy portfolio. This expansion reflects Iberdrola’s long-term strategy of investing heavily in clean energy technologies and supporting global decarbonization efforts.
Wind energy represented the largest contributor to the increase in installed capacity. Both onshore and offshore wind projects added more than 1,400 MW, accounting for the majority of the company’s new capacity additions.
Solar energy also played a major role in Iberdrola’s expansion plans. The company added around 1,000 MW of solar capacity, reflecting the continued competitiveness and rapid deployment of photovoltaic technologies across key markets.
Another notable development was the rapid growth of battery energy storage systems. Battery capacity more than doubled during the period, increasing by approximately 117% following the commissioning of several new storage projects in Spain and Australia.
Energy storage has become increasingly important in supporting grid stability and integrating larger amounts of renewable generation into electricity systems. The expansion of battery capacity enables Iberdrola to better manage intermittent renewable resources and improve system flexibility.
Strong Growth Across International Markets
From a geographical perspective, Continental Europe and Australia delivered some of the most impressive capacity increases. Generation capacity in these regions rose by approximately 23.2%, with more than 1,000 MW of additional capacity installed during the past year.
The growth was driven primarily by new onshore wind projects in countries such as Australia, Greece, and Portugal. Solar developments in Germany and Italy also contributed significantly to the increase in installed capacity.
Australia continues to emerge as a key market for Iberdrola’s renewable energy investments, benefiting from strong policy support and abundant renewable resources. Similarly, Southern European markets remain attractive due to favorable climatic conditions and increasing demand for clean energy solutions.
In the United States, Iberdrola added nearly 800 MW of new generation capacity over the last twelve months, representing an increase of approximately 7.3%. The U.S. market remains strategically important for the company, particularly given the country’s expanding renewable energy sector and supportive investment framework.
The United Kingdom also recorded substantial growth, with installed generation capacity increasing by approximately 400 MW. In Spain, Iberdrola expanded its generation fleet by around 600 MW, reinforcing its leadership position in its home market.
These investments underline the company’s commitment to maintaining a diversified international portfolio and capitalizing on growth opportunities in multiple regions.
Electricity Production Reaches New Milestone
Iberdrola’s total electricity production reached 61,318 GWh during the first half of 2026, representing an increase of nearly 1% compared with the same period last year.
The company noted that production growth accelerated during the second quarter, when output increased by approximately 2%, helping offset softer performance during the earlier part of the year.
Among generation technologies, offshore wind delivered particularly strong results. Electricity production from offshore wind farms increased by 23%, highlighting the growing contribution of this technology to Iberdrola’s overall generation mix.
Offshore wind continues to be one of the fastest-growing renewable sectors globally due to its high capacity factors and large-scale generation capabilities. Iberdrola has been actively investing in offshore wind projects in Europe and other international markets as part of its long-term renewable expansion strategy.
United Kingdom and United States Lead Production Growth
By region, the strongest growth in electricity production was recorded in the United Kingdom, where generation increased by approximately 27.3%.
The significant increase reflects both expanded renewable capacity and favorable operating conditions across the company’s British assets. The United Kingdom remains one of Iberdrola’s most important markets and continues to benefit from substantial investments in renewable energy and electricity infrastructure.
The United States also delivered strong results, with electricity production rising by around 8% during the first half of the year. Continued additions of renewable projects and improved operational performance contributed to this growth.
Meanwhile, production in the company’s other international markets increased by approximately 11.5%, further demonstrating the benefits of geographic diversification.
Stable Production and Strong Hydro Reserves in Spain
In Spain, Iberdrola generated approximately 32,732 GWh during the first half of 2026, broadly in line with production levels recorded during the same period in the previous year.
Hydroelectric generation remained an important contributor to Spain’s energy mix, with the company producing more than 12,000 GWh from hydro facilities.
Despite strong hydroelectric generation, reservoir levels remained exceptionally healthy. As of June 30, Iberdrola reported stored reserves exceeding 8,200 GWh, remaining close to historic highs thanks largely to its pumped-storage capabilities.
Strong hydro reserves provide significant operational flexibility and enhance the company’s ability to manage fluctuations in renewable generation and electricity demand. Pumped-storage facilities also play a crucial role in supporting grid reliability and integrating larger shares of renewable energy.
Positioned for Long-Term Growth
Iberdrola’s operational results for the first half of 2026 demonstrate the company’s ability to capitalize on global electrification trends and growing demand for clean energy.
The combination of increasing electricity distribution volumes, expanding renewable generation capacity, and rising production from key markets positions the company well for future growth. Continued investments in wind, solar, battery storage, and electricity networks are expected to further strengthen Iberdrola’s leadership in the global energy transition.
As countries accelerate decarbonization efforts and electrification becomes increasingly central to economic development, Iberdrola appears well positioned to benefit from rising electricity demand while continuing to expand its renewable energy footprint worldwide.
