Hyliion Signs LOI with Mesa Natural Gas to Deploy 200 KW KARNO Power Module

Hyliion and Mesa Natural Gas Solutions Sign Letter of Intent for Collaboration on the 200 KW KARNO Power Module

Hyliion Holdings Corp. (NYSE American: HYLN), a leading developer of sustainable electricity-generating technologies, has announced the signing of a non-binding Letter of Intent (LOI) with Mesa Natural Gas Solutions, a prominent manufacturer and provider of natural gas generators and microgrid solutions. This collaboration is set to showcase the innovative potential of Hyliion’s KARNO™ Power Module in addressing the growing demand for efficient, scalable, and environmentally-friendly power solutions in oil, gas, and industrial sectors.

The LOI establishes a phased demonstration plan to validate the performance of the 200 kW KARNO Power Module in various real-world applications. Initially, the plan includes the purchase of a single 200 kW KARNO unit, followed by the option for Mesa to acquire additional modules in both 200 kW and 2 MW configurations, which would ultimately add up to a total capacity of 2.4 MW, contingent on the successful performance validation of the first system.

The initial phase of this demonstration will see the 200 kW KARNO Power Module deployed at a commercial site, where it will be used for stationary power generation utilizing natural gas. Following that, the module will be tested at an oil and gas site, where it will operate on wellhead or flare gas. This strategic progression is designed to assess the versatility and robustness of the KARNO Power Module across different energy environments, ensuring its capacity to meet the specific needs of Mesa’s diverse clientele.

The Partnership’s Potential for Innovation

Hyliion’s CEO, Thomas Healy, emphasized the significance of this collaboration as an opportunity to demonstrate the practical, real-world performance of the KARNO Power Module in challenging, high-demand applications. “This collaboration with Mesa is a meaningful opportunity to showcase the KARNO Power Module’s real-world performance in a demanding application,” Healy remarked. He further expressed enthusiasm about the potential of the KARNO system to not only meet the operational needs of Mesa’s customers but also to provide solutions that align with the growing global emphasis on reducing emissions and improving the sustainability of power generation systems.

Healy also highlighted the efficiency, fuel flexibility, and scalability of the KARNO Power Module as key features that would significantly benefit Mesa’s operations. The module is designed to support a wide range of fuel types, providing more flexibility in power generation compared to traditional systems. This makes the KARNO Power Module an ideal fit for a variety of applications, including natural gas-powered generation systems, flare gas recovery, and other industrial uses.

Mesa’s CEO, Scott Gromer, also expressed strong support for the collaboration, viewing the KARNO Power Module as a strategic addition to the company’s existing portfolio of power solutions. “We are always looking for new technologies that help our customers reduce emissions and increase operational efficiency,” said Gromer. “Hyliion’s KARNO system aligns with our vision of delivering dependable, clean, on-site power, and we look forward to evaluating its potential across our energy applications.”

Mesa has been at the forefront of providing natural gas solutions for power generation and microgrid systems, which are critical for many industries in remote or off-grid locations. As the world continues to seek ways to decarbonize energy systems, Mesa is committed to developing technologies that not only support operational needs but also contribute to a more sustainable future. The addition of the KARNO Power Module to its offerings is a step forward in that direction, allowing the company to provide customers with even cleaner, more efficient energy options.

The KARNO Power Module: An Overview

The KARNO Power Module is an innovative, scalable power generation system designed to produce electricity using a range of fuels, including natural gas, biogas, and flare gas. The technology behind the KARNO system is centered around its exceptional efficiency and flexibility, which make it suitable for both stationary and mobile power generation applications. With the ability to generate power from previously wasted resources like flare gas, the KARNO system presents a significant opportunity to help industries reduce their carbon footprint while also recovering valuable energy that would otherwise be lost.

One of the key features of the KARNO Power Module is its adaptability to different energy sources. The module’s design enables it to operate on multiple fuel types, which offers tremendous flexibility for customers in sectors like oil and gas, industrial manufacturing, and more. This versatility is an important aspect of its appeal, as it allows the system to be deployed in various settings, where the fuel source may not always be consistent or ideal for traditional generators.

In addition to its fuel flexibility, the KARNO system is also highly efficient. By utilizing advanced technologies that optimize combustion processes and energy recovery, the KARNO Power Module achieves better fuel efficiency than many conventional power generation systems. This makes it an attractive option for companies looking to reduce their energy costs while simultaneously cutting down on emissions.

A Growing Need for Clean and Reliable Power Solutions

The collaboration between Hyliion and Mesa comes at a time when industries around the world are facing increasing pressure to transition toward cleaner energy sources. The demand for natural gas and renewable energy solutions is on the rise, and businesses are seeking ways to meet their energy needs while minimizing their environmental impact. In the oil and gas sector, flare gas recovery and the use of wellhead gas for power generation are becoming more important as companies look for ways to reduce waste and improve operational efficiency.

At the same time, industrial and commercial facilities are also exploring new technologies to provide reliable, on-site power generation without relying solely on traditional grid systems. Microgrids, which enable localized power generation and distribution, are gaining traction as a means to increase energy independence and ensure continuous power supply in remote locations.

The KARNO Power Module’s ability to address both of these needs—providing efficient power generation from diverse fuel sources and supporting microgrid applications—positions it as an important player in the energy landscape. Its ability to scale from 200 kW to 2 MW also ensures that it can meet the varying power demands of different industries, making it a versatile solution for businesses of all sizes.

A Promising Future for Hyliion and Mesa

The phased deployment of the KARNO Power Module marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for both Hyliion and Mesa. If the performance of the first 200 kW unit meets expectations, Mesa has the option to expand the project by purchasing additional modules, thus demonstrating the scalability of the system. The collaboration could pave the way for further partnerships with other industry leaders in the natural gas, oil, and industrial sectors, as the KARNO Power Module proves its capabilities in a range of applications.

The continued success of this project would also serve as a powerful case study for the broader adoption of clean, on-site power generation solutions, showing how technologies like the KARNO Power Module can play a critical role in helping industries transition to more sustainable energy systems.
