GridStor Acquires Texas Battery Energy Storage Project from Balanced Rock Power

GridStor Expands into Texas with Acquisition of 150 MW / 300 MWh Battery Storage Project in Strategic Move to Support Growing Power Demands

GridStor, a leading developer and operator of utility-scale battery energy storage systems, has announced a significant milestone in its expansion strategy. The company has acquired a 150 MW / 300 MWh battery storage project in Texas from Balanced Rock Power (BRP), reinforcing its commitment to providing critical energy solutions to meet the increasing demand for power in one of the fastest-growing energy markets in the United States. This move also marks a key step for GridStor as it plans to further expand its operations in the Lower Rio Grande Valley region, a critical area within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) service territory.

The Growing Demand for Energy Storage in Texas

As Texas continues its rapid economic expansion, particularly driven by large industrial customers, the state’s power demand is increasing at an extraordinary rate. According to the latest forecast from the ERCOT, the state’s peak load is expected to rise by approximately 50% by 2030. This surge in demand is placing considerable stress on the state’s power infrastructure, with an urgent need for scalable, reliable solutions that can keep pace with the growing energy needs of key industries.

Texas is no stranger to the potential instability in its power system. In recent years, the state has experienced numerous challenges related to grid reliability and extreme weather events that have placed the electric grid under tremendous pressure. In response, the ERCOT power system has seen the deployment of over 8 GW of battery energy storage capacity to date, with more projects on the horizon. GridStor’s latest acquisition is part of the broader strategy to expand battery storage solutions within the state and ensure its power infrastructure can meet future demands.

Chris Taylor, CEO of GridStor, emphasized the importance of battery storage in addressing Texas’ power challenges. “Battery storage is the fastest, most scalable solution to provide reliability in the near term to the Texas power system and its largest industries,” he said. “Batteries provide energy that stabilizes the ERCOT electric grid and supplies its hours of greatest demand every day. Our acquisition demonstrates GridStor’s commitment to roll up our sleeves and build facilities that help Texas sustain its historic economic expansion.”

Project Location and Timeline

The newly acquired project will be located in Hidalgo County, Texas, within the ERCOT region. Once operational, it is expected to provide significant grid support, especially during the hours of peak demand, when the power system is most vulnerable. The battery storage facility is slated to come online by the summer of 2026, providing much-needed capacity to stabilize the grid and support economic growth in the Lower Rio Grande Valley region, a hub for critical Gulf Coast industries.

During the construction phase, which is expected to begin shortly, the project will create over 100 jobs in the local community. These jobs will include skilled tradespersons and apprentices who will contribute to the development and construction of the facility. Once operational, the project will have a significant impact on the resilience of the Lower Rio Grande Valley power system, helping mitigate stress on existing transmission infrastructure and supporting economic growth in vital industries.

John Knight, CEO of Balanced Rock Power, expressed his excitement about the partnership with GridStor and the importance of their work. “BRP is proud to continue supporting GridStor in their efforts to support industrial expansion with utility-scale battery storage,” said Knight. “Together with GridStor, we are building reliable and affordable energy solutions today for a powerful tomorrow.”

Expansion and Future Growth

This acquisition represents GridStor’s fourth project acquisition in the past twelve months, highlighting the company’s rapid growth and strategic focus on building a robust portfolio of energy storage assets. It also marks the second collaboration between GridStor and BRP. The first transaction, GridStor’s Hidden Lakes project, is currently under active construction and is expected to come online later this summer.

GridStor’s success in acquiring and developing large-scale battery energy storage projects demonstrates its deep expertise in energy storage technology and its commitment to addressing grid reliability challenges. The company is backed by Goldman Sachs Asset Management and is composed of a team of seasoned professionals with a proven track record in the energy storage and clean energy sectors. GridStor’s team has a long history of success in energy storage project acquisition, development, finance, and operations.

GridStor has identified several target markets for its battery storage solutions, including regions with rapidly growing energy demand and increasing pressure on grid reliability. As the company continues to expand its footprint across the U.S., Texas remains a key focus due to its size, growth trajectory, and the ongoing need for reliable energy storage infrastructure. The recent acquisition in Hidalgo County represents a critical step in GridStor’s strategy to scale its operations in Texas and other high-demand regions.

GridStor’s Role in the Clean Energy Transition

As part of its broader mission, GridStor is committed to supporting the clean energy transition by providing energy storage solutions that facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid. Battery storage systems play a critical role in ensuring that renewable energy, such as wind and solar power, can be effectively harnessed and distributed when needed. This is particularly important in regions like Texas, where wind and solar energy production has seen significant growth in recent years.

The deployment of large-scale battery storage systems helps to balance supply and demand on the grid by storing excess energy during periods of low demand and releasing it when demand is high. This enhances grid reliability, reduces the need for fossil-fuel-based peaking power plants, and supports the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy system.

“At GridStor, we are focused on developing and operating battery storage systems that are directly integrated with American power infrastructure,” said Taylor. “Our goal is to store electricity when it is abundant and deliver it when it is most needed, helping to create a more reliable, resilient grid that can support the clean energy future.”

Benefits of Battery Energy Storage for Texas

The benefits of battery energy storage are particularly pronounced in Texas, where the power grid has historically been subject to volatility due to extreme weather events, such as winter storms and hurricanes. These events can lead to power outages and disruptions that affect millions of residents and businesses. Battery storage provides a flexible and reliable solution to mitigate these risks, ensuring that power is available when it is needed most.

In addition to improving grid reliability, battery storage systems like the one being developed by GridStor can help to reduce energy costs for consumers and businesses. By storing energy during off-peak hours, when electricity prices are lower, and discharging it during peak demand periods, when prices are higher, battery storage systems can help lower electricity costs for industrial customers and contribute to more affordable energy prices across the state.

As Texas continues to experience rapid population growth and economic expansion, the need for energy storage will only increase. Battery storage systems provide a cost-effective and scalable solution that can meet these growing demands while supporting the state’s clean energy goals.
