The National Grid-operated Grain LNG terminal has announced that its methane emissions performance has been verified by MiQ, a global leader in methane emissions measurement and certification.
Grain LNG has achieved a ‘B’ grade from MiQ, making it the first LNG port in the world to receive this accreditation, as well as the first facility outside of North America. This announcement was made during the BloombergNEF London Summit.
As Europe’s largest LNG terminal, Grain LNG’s certification allows LNG buyers to select cargoes based on their methane emissions profile, thanks to the third-party audited verification of emissions at the terminal. MiQ has already certified the methane emissions of 20% of U.S. natural gas production and, through its pioneering Supply Chain Protocol, is able to provide natural gas buyers with credible estimates of emissions from LNG for the first time.
This certification comes in response to increasing demand from European and UK natural gas buyers for greater transparency regarding emissions linked to their purchases. Additionally, Grain LNG is currently undergoing expansion to store and deliver enough gas to meet up to 33% of the UK’s gas demand. MiQ’s initiative aims to eliminate avoidable methane emissions from the natural gas supply chain during the transition to a clean energy future.
Georges Tijbosch, CEO of MiQ, stated, “This is a significant advancement for enhancing transparency regarding emissions from the global LNG supply chain. The certification of Grain LNG offers UK and European natural gas buyers greater insight into the emissions associated with imported LNG. National Grid and Grain LNG have demonstrated true leadership as the first operator to achieve certification outside the U.S.”
MiQ provides a credible, third-party audited verification system for methane emissions in the oil and gas sector.
Ben Wilson, President of National Grid Ventures, remarked, “As a key player in the UK’s energy system, our customers, partners, and consumers expect the best possible service from us. This new accreditation as a first mover on methane emissions underscores our commitment to providing efficient, market-leading service at Grain LNG.”
Simon Culkin, Managing Director of Grain LNG, added, “In an era of heightened scrutiny regarding emissions, we are thrilled that Grain LNG is the first port of its kind to receive this accreditation. MiQ’s certification highlights Grain LNG not only as the largest LNG port in Europe but also as a world-class facility, demonstrating our operational excellence, diverse customer base, and commitment to effective methane management.”
This announcement follows the European Union’s formal adoption of new methane emission regulations, which require U.S. producers to comply by January 2027. MiQ certification will assist producers in meeting the EU’s new requirements for source-level reporting and third-party verification, enabling continued access to EU markets.
MiQ is dedicated to providing the data and transparency needed to eliminate avoidable methane emissions throughout this decade.
