Gore Partners with Constellation for Hourly Carbon-Free Energy

Constellation Expands Clean Energy Partnership with W. L. Gore & Associates Through Hourly Carbon-Free Matching to Accelerate Emissions Reductions

Constellation (Nasdaq: CEG), the United States’ largest producer of carbon-free energy, announced a new milestone in its collaboration with W. L. Gore & Associates (“Gore”), a global materials science company known for GORE-TEX and its broad range of high-performance products. Building on an existing renewable energy procurement agreement, the two organizations have now incorporated hourly carbon-free energy matching into Gore’s clean energy supply strategy. The enhanced agreement supports the purchase of approximately 110,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of clean energy each year and is projected to reduce Gore’s carbon footprint by an estimated 33,000 metric tons through November 2026.

This latest step marks a significant evolution in Gore’s journey toward achieving more precise and verifiable decarbonization. While the original contract focused on annual clean electricity procurement—primarily supported by solar resources—the upgraded structure now enables true 24/7 carbon-free verification. Powered by Constellation’s always-on nuclear fleet, the largest zero-emissions electricity generation resource in the United States, hourly carbon-free matching ensures that the electricity Gore consumes every hour of the day can be backed by power that does not emit greenhouse gases. This solution addresses a common challenge with renewable energy procurement: the intermittency of solar and wind production, which often requires organizations to rely on fossil-based grid power when renewables are not available.

To complement this offering, Gore also continues to purchase additional renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Constellation to maintain its commitment to achieving 100% renewable electricity across its manufacturing operations. By pairing both clean energy attributes—renewables plus nuclear-enabled 24/7 matching—Gore is strengthening the reliability and transparency of its decarbonization pathway.

Jim McHugh, Chief Commercial Officer at Constellation, highlighted the importance of providing flexible energy solutions that align with corporate climate goals:
“We were pleased to be able to find the best solutions to ensure a clean and emissions-free way for W. L. Gore & Associates to achieve its sustainability goals. By taking advantage of our hourly carbon-free energy matching product, which is enabled by our always-on nuclear fleet, plus maintaining commitments to 100% clean energy supply, Gore continues to be a leader in carbon reduction.”

For Gore, the initiative is tightly connected to the company’s long-term environmental strategy. The organization has established clear objectives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and transition to low-carbon solutions throughout its value chain. Gore has already set ambitious near-term and long-term science-aligned targets, including achieving carbon neutrality for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2050. This includes all direct emissions from operations and indirect emissions associated with purchased energy.

“Gore’s focus on reducing energy use and lowering our carbon footprint underscores the company’s commitment to carbon reduction and responsible innovation,” said Ryan Kelley, carbon reduction project champion for W. L. Gore & Associates. “Through our enhanced relationship with Constellation and use of clean and renewable energy, we are accelerating our progress to reduce Scope 2 emissions. Thanks to 24/7 monitoring, we can verify at any time of day that our energy is coming from carbon-free sources – not fossil fuel sources – helping to deliver reliable results.”

The ability to monitor and verify carbon-free supply on an hourly basis represents an emerging frontier in corporate sustainability. Traditional renewable energy strategies rely on annual accounting and do not address the time-based imbalance between corporate electricity use and renewable generation. Because energy grids are dynamic systems that shift every hour depending on demand and resource availability, many companies find that even with 100% renewable procurement on paper, actual real-time usage still depends on fossil fuels during periods of low renewable output.

Constellation’s hourly matching offering directly addresses this challenge by combining nuclear energy—which provides a constant supply of carbon-free baseload power—with renewable resources to create a more complete 24/7 clean energy profile. This approach aligns with growing interest in hourly carbon accounting frameworks such as the Granular Certificate initiative and evolving guidance being explored by regulators, climate disclosure groups, and organizations like the U.S. Department of Energy.

For corporate customers like Gore, hourly matching strengthens the credibility of sustainability claims and operationalizes their decarbonization strategy. It enables organizations to track and prove that their electricity use and clean power sourcing are aligned in a verifiable, transparent manner. This type of innovation is expected to become increasingly important as more companies set science-based emissions targets and markets demand deeper accountability for climate impacts.

The collaboration also underscores the critical and often-overlooked role of nuclear energy in achieving national and global climate goals. Nuclear facilities provide more than half of the United States’ carbon-free electricity and operate with extremely high capacity factors—meaning they generate electricity continuously without the variability experienced by wind or solar. As more corporations pursue 24/7 carbon-free energy goals, nuclear power’s stability positions it as a strong complement to renewables in the clean energy mix.

By strengthening its procurement strategy with Constellation, W. L. Gore & Associates continues to demonstrate its leadership in operational sustainability and responsible manufacturing. Beyond clean energy procurement, the company continues to evaluate efficiency opportunities, transition to lower-carbon technologies, and explore innovations that reduce environmental impacts across its product portfolio and supply chain.

This expanded agreement with Constellation stands as a model for organizations seeking to go beyond traditional renewable energy sourcing. It illustrates how integrating advanced clean energy products into long-term sustainability plans can accelerate progress toward carbon neutrality while improving measurement, verification, and reliability.
