Odys Aviation, a sustainable aviation company developing hybrid-electric vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, and Fiji Airways, Fiji’s national airline, have signed an Expression of Interest (EOI) to explore the use of Odys Aviation’s runway-independent hybrid VTOL cargo aircraft. Pilot programs utilizing these aircraft are set to begin in 2025.
Odys Aviation’s ‘Laila’ aircraft, with its 400-mile range and multiple cargo configurations, will be instrumental in connecting Fiji’s 330 islands, offering a low-carbon alternative for air cargo across the South Pacific. Additionally, the aircraft will enable the opening of new emergency medical routes previously inaccessible due to infrastructure limitations. The partnership will also allow Fiji Airways to expand its business, securing contracts with logistics companies, government agencies, and NGOs throughout the region.
This announcement follows Odys Aviation’s partnership with Honeywell, where both companies will collaborate to develop Ground Control Stations to support the deployment of the Laila hybrid VTOL aircraft, with pilot programs slated for 2025.
“The era of sustainable aviation is here, and our collaboration with Odys Aviation strengthens our commitment to reducing emissions and shaping the future of travel,” said Andre Viljoen, CEO of Fiji Airways. “This partnership not only expands our operations today but invests in a sustainable future for the people of Fiji.”
James Dorris, CEO and Co-Founder of Odys Aviation, added, “We are excited to partner with Fiji Airways and work with local authorities to bring sustainable aviation to the region, fostering greater connectivity across Fiji and the South Pacific.”
