As of 2024, around 600 million people in Africa, roughly 43% of the continent’s population, still lack access to electricity, with the majority of these individuals located in sub-Saharan Africa. This energy gap poses a significant challenge to sustainable development in the region, especially as demand for energy continues to grow with urbanization and population increases.

Kenya’s electrification has progressed significantly but still 23% of the population is still not electrified. Kenya is a leader in renewable energy development in East Africa & the country is showcasing significant advancements in wind, solar, and geothermal energy.

Kenya received $70 million in concessional funding through CIF’s Renewable Energy Integration Program (REI). The country currently generates about 45% percent of its energy from geothermal energy and 19% from hydropower. Its solar and wind capacity currently account for 17% and 3%; the remainder of its energy use is supplied by a mix of other sources including thermal (fossil fuel-based) energy sources.

Considering the 310MW Lake Turkana wind power project in Kenya, wind power currently accounts for 14% of the total installed capacity at 436MW. More wind energy projects are lined up to tap the country’s 4600MW total potential.

Although solar energy currently represents a smaller portion of the overall energy mix, it holds substantial growth potential. Also, it is worth mentioning solar energy contributes to a mere 3% of the total energy mix of Kenya. Current solar production in Kenya is around 500MW compared to a total potential of 15,000MW which highlights the growth potential for solar energy. The Kenya Off-Grid Solar Access Project (KOSAP) funded by the World Bank is creditworthy in pushing the idea of increasing the mix of solar energy in Kenya by serving the energy malnourished populations.

Kenya is also recognized as a leader in geothermal energy in Africa, making a significant contribution to the national grid and effectively reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Kenya’s favorable policies, including tax exemptions, position the country as a prime destination for foreign direct investment in the energy sector. Kenya’s geothermal potential is estimated to be at a staggering 10000 MW of untapped energy waiting to be harnessed.

With a goal to achieve universal electricity access by 2030, the national energy mix aims to transition from 90% to 100% renewable sources by 2030, integrating geothermal, wind, solar, and hydroelectric power.

With this insight and the ensuring opportunities in the neighboring countries of Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Tanzania, Bricsa Consulting is committed to hosting the 7th Edition of PowerTech Africa, scheduled to be held on the 27th & 28th of January 2025. It will be an exclusive closed-door gathering of relevant renewable practitioners from both public and private sectors across the world with a keen interest in participating in the growth and development opportunities in the region. We look forward to welcoming the interested participants to share the platform and be a part of an elite gathering looking towards a positive outcome.
