The Bakken Formation in North Dakota, home to over 17,000 active oil wells, contains some of the largest oil and natural gas reserves in the U.S. Compressed air is critical for companies operating there, powering natural gas compressors, instruments, and oil well applications.
In early 2024, the U.S. government introduced a regulation banning “flame-off” practices—burning excess natural gas released during extraction. This regulation requires companies to upgrade their systems to capture and reuse this excess gas rather than flaring it off.
In response, Industrial Equipment Sales & Services (IESS) developed the “Air Source One” package, now used in the Bakken Formation. This solution integrates ELGi’s EN Series rotary screw compressors in a 6×12 ft enclosure with heating and ventilation, making it durable and compact enough to place near oil wells. The system compresses and reinjects excess natural gas back into the reservoir, helping operators comply with the flame-off ban.
IESS chose ELGi’s EN Series compressors for their compact design, serviceability, and ability to support a dryer package mounted directly on the compressor tank, saving valuable space. The compressors range from 4 to 20 hp, offering a capacity of up to 150 psi. For added reliability in remote locations, a duplex compressor option is available.
“Our Air Source One system with ELGi air compressors is essential for companies to operate efficiently while meeting environmental standards,” said Randy Schlossin, IESS sales representative.
The EN Series compressors are designed for easy maintenance, with accessible side panels and durable belt drives with a 10,000-hour lifespan. ELGi backs the compressors with a six-year air end warranty and a five-year package warranty, making them ideal for demanding oil field environments.
Schlossin emphasized, “With ELGi’s proven quality, we provide reliable, cost-effective dry air solutions even in remote locations, supporting flame-off operations and beyond.”
IESS and ELGi have built a strong partnership over the years, with IESS handling system installations, field service, and parts inventory, while ELGi’s support team provides technical expertise. “Together, we’re committed to responsive service and reliability for our customers,” Schlossin added, underscoring the collaboration’s importance in meeting customers’ evolving needs.
