
ČEZ Group Advances Long-Term Operation Strategy for Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant, Strengthening Czech Energy Security
ČEZ has initiated a comprehensive preparatory process aimed at enabling the long-term operation of the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant, marking a significant milestone in the Czech Republic’s energy strategy. At the same time, the company is conducting detailed analyses to assess the feasibility of extending the operational life of the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant, further reinforcing its nuclear energy portfolio.

Today, extending plant lifespans to 80 years is becoming increasingly common worldwide, with several nuclear units already licensed for such durations.
According to CEO Daniel Beneš, ongoing technical, economic, and safety evaluations indicate that extending the operational life of Dukovany is both feasible and realistic. He emphasized that the plant remains in excellent condition, supported by continuous investments and rigorous maintenance programs.
Beneš also highlighted that the long-term operation of Dukovany will not hinder future nuclear development projects. On the contrary, it complements ongoing plans to construct new nuclear units at Dukovany and to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs). As electricity consumption continues to rise, the Czech Republic will require a diversified portfolio of emission-free energy sources to meet demand while achieving climate goals.

These assessments are extensive and demanding, requiring meticulous preparation and in-depth knowledge of the plant’s condition. Continuous Upgrades Enhance Performance and Output

The Dukovany units, originally commissioned between 1985 and 1987, now achieve power outputs of approximately 512 MW per unit. Similarly, the Temelín units, commissioned in 2000 and 2002, have reached outputs of around 1,086 MW.
These enhancements are the result of targeted upgrades and efficiency improvements. According to Zronek, the cumulative effect of these upgrades is equivalent to adding an entirely new generating unit at Dukovany.
Looking ahead, ČEZ plans to continue these modernization initiatives. At Dukovany, major components of the turbine hall—including turbo sets and generators—are being replaced as part of long-term upgrade programs. Simultaneously, both Dukovany and Temelín are implementing large-scale projects to modernize their control and safety systems, incorporating advanced digital technologies.

Current assessments indicate that the reactor vessels at both Dukovany and Temelín remain in excellent condition and fully meet all safety requirements. As a result, there is no need for their replacement—a factor that significantly supports the feasibility of extended operation.
