Consumers Energy Launches $1.2 Billion Reliability Action Plan to Strengthen Michigan’s Electric Grid

Consumers Energy has received approval to move forward with a major set of upgrades aimed at bolstering Michigan’s electric grid, a critical investment that will enhance reliability for nearly two million homes and businesses across the state. The company’s 2026 Reliability Action Plan provides the funding necessary to support improvements in communities including Grand Rapids, Flint, Lansing, and areas of Northern Michigan that were recently impacted by this month’s severe winter storm.

These upgrades mark a continuation of Consumers Energy’s multi-year commitment to reducing outages and increasing the resilience of Michigan’s power system. Since 2021, the average electric customer has experienced one hour less of downtime in normal conditions—a 28% reduction—ranking among the largest reliability improvements in the nation over the same period.

“Consumers Energy is helping our customers by securing the grid and giving them the tools to reduce and manage their bills,” said Greg Salisbury, senior vice president of electric distribution at Consumers Energy. “Our Reliability Action Plan represents a major investment that will result in fewer and shorter power outages, while ensuring that our customers have the support they need to manage rising costs.”

The Michigan Public Service Commission’s approval of the plan follows nearly a year-long review process. Last June, Consumers Energy submitted the Reliability Action Plan to the commission, outlining a strategy to strengthen the state’s power infrastructure through a combination of targeted investments and customer-focused initiatives.

Under the plan, roughly 75 cents of every customer dollar goes directly toward securing and modernizing the electric grid. Consumers Energy has outlined several key initiatives for 2026 and beyond, including:

  • Tree Trimming Expansion: The company will double the number of miles it trims trees along power line corridors this decade, reducing the risk of storm-related outages.
  • Power Line Burial: More overhead lines will be placed underground this year, providing protection against extreme weather events and other threats that can cause interruptions.
  • Enhanced Poles and Infrastructure: New poles designed to withstand stronger winds and severe storms will be installed, improving overall resilience.
  • Smart Technology Deployment: Advanced systems that can instantly detect and respond to service interruptions will be rolled out, allowing faster restoration of power.
  • Grid Security Measures: The plan includes investments to protect both physical and digital aspects of the grid, ensuring cybersecurity and safeguarding against potential threats.

“We recognize the financial pressures that our customers face, from energy costs to everyday expenses like healthcare and groceries,” said Kelly Hall, senior vice president of regulatory and legal affairs at Consumers Energy. “That is why we are making smart, cost-effective upgrades to the grid. Our goal is to prevent problems before they happen, enhance reliability, and ensure that customers continue to receive safe, dependable electricity.”

Consumers Energy’s commitment goes beyond infrastructure. With the arrival of spring, the company is actively assisting customers who were most affected by last season’s harsh winter conditions. Outreach efforts are focused on seniors and other vulnerable populations, helping them manage their energy bills and adopt practices to reduce future costs.

In addition to these initiatives, Consumers Energy has contributed $5 million to 11 nonprofit organizations across Michigan to provide direct assistance for energy bills. These programs aim to help families stay current on payments, avoid service disruptions, and reduce financial stress during extreme weather months.

The company also plans to file its 2027 Reliability Action Plan in June, ensuring continued investment in grid modernization and reliability. Notification to the Michigan Public Service Commission will begin next week, kicking off the regulatory review for next year’s improvements.

Consumers Energy serves as Michigan’s largest energy provider, delivering electricity and natural gas to approximately 6.8 million residents across all 68 counties in the Lower Peninsula.
