BWXT Canada and Westinghouse Forge Partnership for AP1000® and AP300™ Projects

BWXT Canada Ltd., a subsidiary of BWX Technologies, Inc., and Westinghouse Electric Company have jointly announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on nuclear new-build projects both in Canada and internationally. This strategic partnership aims to leverage BWXT’s manufacturing expertise and Westinghouse’s innovative reactor designs to advance the deployment of carbon-free nuclear energy solutions worldwide.

Under the terms of the agreement, BWXT Canada may manufacture key components for Westinghouse’s AP1000® and AP300™ reactor designs. These components include steam generators, reactor vessels, pressure vessels, and heat exchangers—critical elements in the construction and operation of nuclear power plants. This partnership aligns with global efforts to transition to cleaner energy sources, addressing the pressing need for sustainable power generation.

“This partnership will expand the power of clean energy around the globe,” stated John MacQuarrie, president of BWXT Commercial Operations. “In addition to our highly skilled Canadian workforce and decades of experience, we have unmatched manufacturing capabilities that will help bring Westinghouse’s designs to life, supplying the world with the carbon-free energy it needs for decades to come.”

BWXT Canada’s impressive track record spans more than six decades, during which the company has been at the forefront of designing, manufacturing, commissioning, and servicing nuclear power generation equipment. This includes expertise in pressurized water reactor steam generators, nuclear fuel and fuel components, critical plant components, and other related services. As a dominant player in the North American nuclear power equipment market, BWXT offers unparalleled manufacturing capabilities, providing Westinghouse and its customers with reliability and certainty in the supply of major components for AP1000 and AP300 projects.

The AP1000® reactor, known for its safety and efficiency, is a proven design with successful deployments in multiple locations worldwide. It is characterized by its passive safety systems and modular construction, enabling faster build times and reduced costs. The newer AP300™ reactor is a smaller, advanced version of the AP1000®, designed to meet the growing demand for compact and flexible nuclear solutions. Both designs are pivotal in reducing carbon emissions and addressing the global energy transition.

“BWXT Canada is a leading supply chain partner that will help us deliver North America’s next AP1000 project on time and on budget,” said Dan Lipman, president of Westinghouse Energy Systems. “In addition, we see them as a key player supporting global AP1000 and AP300 projects, which will benefit the Canadian economy by employing local trades and creating jobs in Canada.”

This collaboration is set to enhance Canada’s standing in the global nuclear energy sector. By tapping into BWXT’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities and skilled workforce, the partnership is poised to contribute significantly to the deployment of advanced nuclear reactors, ensuring timely delivery and adherence to budgetary requirements. The initiative also underscores the importance of fostering local economic growth through job creation and the development of specialized skills within Canada’s workforce.

The AP1000 and AP300 reactors represent the next generation of nuclear technology, offering scalable solutions for diverse energy needs. With an increasing global focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, nuclear power is gaining renewed attention as a reliable, carbon-free energy source. The partnership between BWXT and Westinghouse underscores their shared commitment to advancing nuclear technology and supporting the global transition to sustainable energy.

Beyond the immediate benefits to the nuclear industry, this collaboration is expected to have broader implications for the Canadian economy and its role in the global energy market. By investing in cutting-edge nuclear technology and fostering international partnerships, Canada can position itself as a leader in clean energy innovation. The agreement also reflects the strategic importance of building robust supply chains and manufacturing capabilities to support the growing demand for advanced nuclear solutions.
