Bloom Energy Secures 20 MW Deal with FPM Development to Strengthen California Grid Resilience

Bloom Energy (NYSE: BE), a leader in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) and electrolyzer (SOEC) technology, has partnered with FPM Development to deploy 20 megawatts (MW) of Bloom’s SOFCs at two locations in Los Angeles. This project highlights Bloom’s ability to rapidly enhance grid resilience for U.S. utilities. Hardware installation is scheduled for completion by the end of 2024.

The agreement involves placing Bloom’s fuel cell-based Energy Servers at repurposed commercial sites strategically chosen to meet rising electricity demands. FPM, a utility-scale project developer, collaborates with ABZ, Inc., and Montalto Energy for swift implementation of these distributed generation projects.

“Bloom’s technology is uniquely suited to deliver reliable, distributed power and mitigate shortages as states face rising demand and intermittent renewables,” said Aman Joshi, Bloom Energy’s global Chief Commercial Officer.

This initial deal with FPM underscores several key benefits of Bloom’s fuel cells:

  • Rapid Deployment: Bloom’s fuel cells can be installed within months, addressing urgent power needs without long infrastructure delays.
  • Flexibility and Scalability: The modular system easily integrates into existing sites, allowing for future capacity expansion.
  • Reliability: With a fault-tolerant design, Bloom’s systems provide resilient power in extreme weather and challenging conditions.
  • Sustainability: Bloom’s technology generates power without combustion, producing minimal emissions and operating on multiple fuels for a lower carbon footprint. It’s also CARB Distributed Generation certified and exempt from air permits in many districts, including California’s South Coast.

FPM executive Brad Hoffman noted, “Bloom’s technology enables us to deliver clean power solutions faster, creating financial and sustainability benefits for municipalities.”

Supported by California’s Go-Biz (Governor’s Office of Business and Development), this project marks the beginning of FPM’s further planned developments to help meet California’s growing power needs with reliable distributed generation solutions.
