Black & Veatch, a global leader in critical infrastructure solutions, is assessing the feasibility of implementing carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology at coal-fired power plants in Vietnam. Commissioned by the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI), Black & Veatch will study three plants owned by Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam or PVN): Vung Ang 1 in Ha Tinh Province, Song Hau 1 in Hau Giang Province, and Thai Binh 2 in Thai Binh Province. Each plant has a capacity of 2 x 600 megawatts (MW).
“This is the first carbon capture study for coal-fired power plants in Vietnam, and its results will be crucial in shaping our national CCUS roadmap and legal framework,” said Dr. Nguyen Huu Luong, Senior Expert at VPI.
The study aims to review the current carbon capture technology landscape and assess its feasibility and effectiveness for the flue gas from these power plants.
“Advanced technologies like CCUS can significantly aid power producers and heavy industries in reducing emissions in the region,” said Narsingh Chaudhary, President of Black & Veatch’s Asia Pacific and India business. “We are dedicated to providing innovative solutions to help the Asia Pacific energy sector meet growing demands with cleaner energy sources.”
As part of the front-end loading (FEL) study, Black & Veatch will assess carbon capture technologies, recommend suitable solutions for each plant, and develop preliminary designs for the carbon capture units. The study will also propose strategies for integrating these units with the existing power plants.
Vietnam’s National Energy Masterplan for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, aims to adopt CCUS solutions in industrial facilities and power plants, targeting a capture capacity of around 1 million metric tons per year by 2040 and 3 to 6 million metric tons per year by 2050.
With over 30 years of experience in carbon capture technology, Black & Veatch is a market leader in the field, specializing in CO2 capture, compression, and handling systems. The company also has expertise in utilizing CO2 for methanol and synthetic natural gas production, as well as bioprocesses. Black & Veatch’s regulatory and market experience supports the growth and planning of carbon capture and utilization or sequestration projects.
