In a landmark development, South Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited (SBPDCL) has entered into an agreement with REC and Bidgely to implement cutting-edge AI-powered solutions. This initiative aims to enhance consumer services, reduce losses from electricity theft, and ensure a more efficient, sustainable, and transparent power distribution system.

The collaboration marks a new era in Bihar’s energy sector, prioritizing technological innovation for better service delivery. By leveraging AI-powered data analytics, SBPDCL intends to revolutionize the way power is monitored, consumed, and billed.

“Providing effective energy analytics to consumers in real-time is an important step towards the modernization of Bihar’s power distribution sector. Through REC’s support and Bidgely’s AI-powered analytics technology, we aim to increase transparency, improve billing accuracy, and motivate consumers to use electricity in an economical manner,” said Mahendra Kumar, Managing Director of SBPDCL.

This strategic approach will not only bring efficiency but will also empower consumers to manage their electricity usage effectively. The implementation of AI will offer real-time insights, making it possible to detect anomalies and identify potential cases of electricity theft.

Bidgely’s AI-driven solutions are designed to enhance the operational efficiency of power distribution networks. The company first demonstrated its AI capabilities at the Ministry of Power’s flagship event, Powerthon 2022. This hackathon aimed at discovering innovative solutions to address power distribution challenges across India. During the event, Bidgely showcased how its Energy Theft Solution utilizes smart meter data to identify unusual consumption patterns, detect potential meter tampering, and uncover tariff misuse cases.

The success of this demonstration led to the adoption of Bidgely’s technology in Bihar, where it has already delivered promising results. Within just the first month of implementation, over 136 potential cases of electricity theft were flagged, showcasing the transformative power of AI in curbing non-technical losses.

Beyond preventing energy theft, Bidgely’s AI technology enriches smart meter data by providing granular, hour-by-hour, appliance-level insights into consumer energy usage. This capability offers several advantages:
