Avangrid Powers Ohio Grid with First Energy from Powell Creek Solar

Avangrid, Inc., a leading energy company and part of the Iberdrola Group, has announced that its Powell Creek solar project in Putnam County, Ohio, has started delivering energy to the local electric grid. This milestone marks a significant step toward strengthening Ohio’s renewable energy infrastructure and supporting the region’s growing energy demands. The company is continuing with commissioning activities, ensuring the facility operates at full capacity before reaching commercial operation later this year.

According to Avangrid CEO Pedro Azagra, the Powell Creek project is a pivotal utility-scale solar initiative that will contribute to the local economy and promote energy independence in Northwest Ohio. Azagra highlighted that energy demand is surging nationwide due to increased manufacturing, electrification, and the expansion of data centers. The addition of new energy sources, such as Powell Creek, enhances the resilience and reliability of the electricity grid, benefitting the local community, the region, and the state as a whole.

With a capacity of 150 MWac (202 MWdc), the Powell Creek solar facility consists of approximately 300,000 solar panels. This vast array of photovoltaic panels is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 30,000 homes annually. Beyond its contribution to clean energy, the project has played a crucial role in job creation. During its construction phase, Powell Creek supported about 500 jobs, with the majority being local union workers, strengthening the regional workforce and economy.

Another significant benefit of the Powell Creek project is its long-term financial contribution to the community. The project is projected to provide over $31 million in property tax revenue to local taxing jurisdictions over its lifetime. These funds will support various public services, including local schools, emergency response services, and infrastructure improvements. Additionally, landowners who have leased their property for the solar farm will receive direct financial benefits, further stimulating economic growth in the region.

Avangrid’s involvement in Ohio’s renewable energy landscape extends beyond Powell Creek. The company previously developed the Blue Creek wind farm, which has been in operation since 2012. With a capacity of 304 MW, Blue Creek generates enough energy to power approximately 76,000 homes annually. The success of Blue Creek underscores Avangrid’s commitment to investing in sustainable energy solutions and expanding its footprint in Ohio.

The Powell Creek solar project aligns with broader national and global trends emphasizing clean energy transitions. As concerns about climate change and carbon emissions intensify, renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power are becoming integral to meeting sustainability goals. The growing demand for electricity, fueled by emerging industries and technological advancements, further underscores the importance of increasing renewable energy generation capacity.

Ohio, in particular, has witnessed significant strides in renewable energy development. While traditionally reliant on coal and natural gas, the state has increasingly embraced wind and solar power to diversify its energy mix. Policymakers and industry leaders recognize the value of integrating more renewable sources to enhance grid stability and reduce environmental impact. Avangrid’s investments in Ohio reflect this shift, as the company actively participates in shaping the state’s energy future.

Beyond environmental benefits, large-scale solar projects like Powell Creek contribute to economic resilience. The renewable energy sector has become a catalyst for job creation, providing employment opportunities in construction, engineering, operations, and maintenance. The skills required for these roles align with the evolving workforce needs, allowing communities to develop expertise in a rapidly growing industry.

Furthermore, renewable energy projects foster partnerships between energy companies, local governments, and landowners. These collaborations ensure that projects are implemented in a way that maximizes benefits for all stakeholders. For instance, leasing agreements provide landowners with a stable source of income, while municipalities receive tax revenues that fund essential services and infrastructure improvements.

As Powell Creek progresses toward full commercial operation, Avangrid remains focused on optimizing the project’s performance and efficiency. Ongoing testing and commissioning activities are critical to ensuring the seamless integration of the facility into the local grid. By prioritizing operational excellence, Avangrid aims to maximize the project’s energy output and long-term reliability.

The successful launch of Powell Creek also demonstrates Avangrid’s strategic vision for expanding its renewable energy portfolio. The company continues to explore opportunities for developing additional wind and solar projects across the United States. By leveraging technological advancements and innovative energy solutions, Avangrid is positioning itself as a leader in the transition to a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

Ohio’s renewable energy sector is expected to experience continued growth, driven by favorable policies, technological advancements, and increasing public and private sector investments. Large-scale projects like Powell Creek play a crucial role in this transition, helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and advancing the state’s clean energy goals.
