Avangrid Generates Power for 2.4 Million Homes in First Half of 2025

Avangrid Powers 2.4 Million U.S. Homes in First Half of 2025, Expands Clean Energy Footprint Nationwide

Avangrid, Inc., a leading U.S. sustainable energy company and a proud member of the global Iberdrola Group, has reported a remarkable achievement in the first six months of 2025. The company generated approximately 13,000 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity, a volume sufficient to supply power to roughly 2.4 million U.S. homes for half a year. This milestone reflects Avangrid’s commitment to addressing America’s rising energy needs through a robust and diverse portfolio of generation projects spanning renewable and conventional sources.

The accomplishment underscores the company’s dual focus: meeting the immediate and long-term electricity requirements of American households and businesses, while strategically investing in infrastructure that reinforces U.S. energy independence. By scaling up production capacity, Avangrid is not only ensuring reliability but also contributing to affordability—two pillars of sustainable growth in the U.S. power sector.

Meeting a Nation’s Rising Power Demands

Avangrid’s success in early 2025 comes against the backdrop of accelerating electricity demand across the United States. Factors such as urban growth, electrification of transportation, and, most notably, the rapid expansion of data centers and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure have created unprecedented strain on the national grid.

Avangrid is leading the way to help meet the nation’s growing demand for electricity, driven in large part by the rapid expansion of data centers,” said Jose Antonio Miranda, Avangrid’s Chief Executive Officer. “As we expand our investments in U.S. generation and grid infrastructure, we are strengthening American energy independence and powering long-term economic growth. We will continue working with our many stakeholders to bring new projects online, ensuring families and industries across America have access to safe, reliable, and affordable power.”

The CEO’s comments align with a broader industry trend: utilities and independent power producers are racing to add new capacity and reinforce transmission infrastructure, ensuring the grid can handle surges in demand without compromising reliability.

A Coast-to-Coast Energy Network

Avangrid’s national footprint is expansive. The company operates more than 80 power plants across the United States, with a combined energy generation capacity exceeding 10.5 gigawatts (GW). These facilities range from large-scale solar and wind farms to conventional power stations, enabling a balanced energy mix that supports both sustainability goals and grid stability.

The first half of 2025 saw notable growth in solar power generation for Avangrid. Earlier this year, the company brought three new solar projects into commercial operation in Texas, California, and Ohio. Collectively, these sites represent about 600 megawatts (MW) of additional capacity, directly contributing to a 125% increase in solar output compared to the same period in 2024. This achievement demonstrates the company’s ability to execute and deliver complex projects on schedule while adapting to regional market needs.

Since 2015, Avangrid has increased its total generating capacity by 66%, a testament to its steady investment pace and its role as a critical player in the transformation of the U.S. power generation landscape.

Supporting the Data Center and AI Boom

A significant portion of Avangrid’s output is already serving some of the most energy-intensive sectors in the modern economy. The company currently operates 10 dedicated projects supplying more than 1.5 GW of electricity to data centers and leading firms in the technology and AI industries. With digital transformation accelerating worldwide, the demand for secure, high-capacity power sources is only expected to grow.

To address this, Avangrid has five additional projects under construction, collectively representing nearly 700 MW of future capacity. These facilities will supply clean and reliable energy to technology leaders, helping them meet corporate sustainability goals while satisfying their massive and fast-growing energy requirements.

Investing in America’s Grid Future

While generation capacity is crucial, Avangrid recognizes that grid infrastructure is the backbone of a resilient energy system. In March 2025, the company unveiled plans to invest $20 billion in U.S. electrical grid improvements by 2030. This investment will focus on modernizing transmission lines, expanding grid connectivity to renewable energy sites, and integrating advanced control systems to enhance efficiency and reduce outages.

This initiative reflects the United States’ position as a top investment priority for both Avangrid and its parent company, Iberdrola. By reinforcing the nation’s transmission network, Avangrid aims to ensure that power generated from its projects reaches end-users swiftly, reliably, and cost-effectively.

Contribution to Iberdrola’s Global Growth

Avangrid’s achievements also play a pivotal role in Iberdrola’s international performance. During the first half of 2025, Iberdrola’s global production surpassed 66,000 GWh, marking a 2.3% year-over-year increase. Additionally, the group’s total generation capacity exceeded 57,000 MW—a new milestone.

These figures illustrate the synergistic relationship between Iberdrola’s global expertise and Avangrid’s U.S. operations. As part of a multinational leader in sustainable energy, Avangrid benefits from access to advanced technologies, best practices, and capital resources that accelerate project delivery and innovation.

Driving Sustainability and Energy Independence

Beyond meeting economic and operational objectives, Avangrid’s strategy is deeply intertwined with environmental stewardship. The company’s expansion in renewable generation is directly aligned with U.S. and global decarbonization goals. By adding new solar, wind, and hybrid energy projects, Avangrid is actively reducing reliance on fossil fuels, cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.

The focus on energy independence is equally significant. As geopolitical uncertainties and global supply chain pressures continue to affect energy markets, the ability to produce and deliver electricity domestically has become a national priority. Avangrid’s growing portfolio ensures that more of America’s power needs are met from domestic sources, reducing exposure to volatile international markets.
