Pedro Azagra: A Proven Global Leader in Clean Energy
Pedro Azagra brings extensive experience and a proven record of strategic vision to his new role as CEO of Iberdrola, one of the world’s foremost renewable energy companies. Since becoming CEO of Avangrid in May 2022, Azagra has overseen a period of notable expansion in financial performance, project execution, and organizational growth. His leadership has been instrumental in steering Avangrid through the complex challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, historic inflationary pressures, and supply chain disruptions that have affected the global energy sector.
Azagra’s tenure at Avangrid has been marked by his ability to implement strategic priorities that align with the broader goals of the Iberdrola Group. He built and empowered a resilient management team at Avangrid, ensuring that the company is well positioned for sustained success even as he transitions to lead the parent company. Under his leadership, Avangrid strengthened its presence in the renewable energy market, expanded project pipelines, and reinforced regulatory engagement at both state and federal levels.
Before his time at Avangrid, Azagra served as Chief Development Officer for Iberdrola, S.A. In that role, he spearheaded more than 120 corporate transactions with a combined valuation exceeding $120 billion. Azagra’s influence extends beyond corporate boardrooms. He currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of Neoenergia, S.A., a publicly traded company on the São Paulo Stock Exchange and a key member of the Iberdrola Group in Brazil. Since October 2021, he has led Avangrid Power, the company’s renewable energy generation division, through a transformative phase that saw improved financial performance, disciplined project execution, and a substantial increase in capacity.
Under his leadership, Avangrid Power reached an impressive milestone—surpassing 10 gigawatts (GW) of installed generation capacity. This growth supports energy delivery to over 3.1 million customers across the United States and positions Avangrid as a major contributor to America’s clean energy transition.
Miranda’s career spans more than two decades in the global energy industry. Before joining Avangrid, he served as CEO of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy for the Americas region, where he also chaired the company’s boards in the United States, Mexico, and Brazil. His leadership spanned key growth regions across North and Latin America, emphasizing wind power, technology development, and grid integration.
Earlier in his career, Miranda held top executive roles in China, serving as Chairman and CEO of Gamesa’s operations there. His tenure in Asia demonstrated his ability to lead complex projects in diverse regulatory and commercial environments. Before entering the renewable energy sector, Miranda held several senior positions within the transmission and distribution divisions of ABB, a global engineering firm, further enriching his technical and leadership credentials.
Miranda holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from ICADE at the Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid and a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Oviedo in Spain. His international education and leadership background make him uniquely suited to guide Avangrid as it plays a pivotal role in advancing Iberdrola’s global sustainability goals.
