Accordion Expands Restructuring Team with Energy & Renewables Expert

Accordion Expands Energy and Renewables Expertise with Strategic Senior Hires in Turnaround & Restructuring Practice

Accordion, an AI and data-powered financial consulting firm specializing in supporting private-capital-backed companies, has announced a significant expansion of its Turnaround & Restructuring (T&R) Practice. The firm has appointed Scott Pinsonnault and John Shepherd as Senior Managing Directors, marking a strategic step in strengthening Accordion’s sector expertise, particularly in energy, renewables, and transition markets.

This move comes at a pivotal time for the energy sector, which is navigating market volatility, regulatory uncertainty, and an accelerated shift toward renewable and transitional energy sources. Both Pinsonnault and Shepherd bring decades of experience guiding distressed or challenged organizations through complex restructuring processes while unlocking value in companies positioned at the intersection of energy innovation and financial transformation.

Responding to Rising Demand in Energy Restructuring

The energy industry, encompassing everything from traditional oil and gas operations to renewable power generation, has experienced sweeping change in recent years. The transition toward cleaner energy sources, coupled with shifts in global demand, rising capital costs, and heightened investor scrutiny, has put immense pressure on companies to adapt quickly.

Accordion recognizes that in this environment, private-capital-backed energy companies—its core clientele—face unprecedented challenges. The addition of Pinsonnault and Shepherd underscores Accordion’s commitment to helping these businesses stabilize operations, restructure finances, and reposition for sustainable growth.

“In a landscape of volatility, regulatory shifts, and capital intensity, the energy and renewables sector sits at an inflection point that demands Turnaround & Restructuring services that don’t just preserve value, but unlock it,” said Andrew Hede, Senior Managing Director and Head of Accordion’s T&R Practice. “Scott and John will be invaluable in ensuring complexity never escalates into crisis. Together with our broader team, they will help clients and their stakeholders stabilize operations, unlock value, and position companies for sustainable success even in the most uncertain markets.”

The Experience of Scott Pinsonnault

Based in Dallas, Scott Pinsonnault brings nearly 30 years of restructuring and turnaround leadership, much of it directly in the energy sector. His career spans upstream oil and gas, oilfield services, and oilfield manufacturing, as well as complex restructuring assignments that required deep knowledge of operational and financial levers.

Pinsonnault has hands-on experience in executive leadership, having served in interim C-suite roles such as CEO, CFO, and CRO. His ability to step into the highest levels of management during times of instability has enabled companies to navigate crisis while maintaining stakeholder confidence.

Earlier in his career, Pinsonnault worked with GE Structured Finance Energy, where he managed reserve-based lending investments and other structured credit opportunities in the oil and gas sector. Before transitioning to finance, he began as a practicing geoscientist, giving him a unique technical foundation that complements his financial expertise.

Commenting on his new role, Pinsonnault emphasized the importance of strategy in today’s evolving energy environment:
“Energy and renewable markets today require more than operational fixes—they demand a strategic rethinking of capital deployment, cost structure, and asset performance. I’m excited to join Accordion’s industry-leading Turnaround & Restructuring team, not only to expand our services to this critical sector, but also to help clients navigate volatility while protecting and enhancing value.”

The Expertise of John Shepherd

With over three decades of experience, John Shepherd brings an equally impressive record of leadership in corporate restructuring, private equity, corporate finance, and M&A advisory. Shepherd’s career is distinguished by his ability to work across the entire spectrum of energy—both conventional and renewable—making him a versatile and deeply knowledgeable advisor for companies facing restructuring needs.

His background includes 15 years in energy private equity, largely with GE Capital, where he gained insight into the dynamics of investing in capital-intensive energy assets. Before that, Shepherd spent 11 years as an investment banker with Morgan Stanley, advising companies on mergers, acquisitions, financings, and other strategic transactions.

In more recent years, Shepherd has taken on restructuring and interim management assignments, working directly with energy and renewables companies to implement financial recovery strategies while preserving long-term growth potential.

“Private-capital-backed energy and renewables companies face unique challenges with the rapid growth and diversification of energy sources and constantly changing global demand,” said Shepherd. “By combining Accordion’s data-driven approach with deep sector expertise, we can deliver solutions that not only solve immediate problems but also create lasting opportunities for future growth.”

A Broader Strategy to Strengthen Accordion’s Position in Energy

The addition of Pinsonnault and Shepherd is not an isolated move but part of a broader expansion strategy within Accordion’s Turnaround & Restructuring Practice. Recently, Accordion also welcomed Houston-based senior directors Anju Joseph and William Walker, further bolstering its capabilities in the energy and renewables sector.

This growing bench of professionals, with backgrounds spanning finance, operations, restructuring, and energy market dynamics, positions Accordion as one of the leading advisors for private-capital-backed energy companies navigating uncertain terrain.

Accordion’s technology-driven model is another differentiator. The firm leverages AI, advanced data analytics, and digital tools to enhance its advisory capabilities, enabling its professionals to rapidly assess operational weaknesses, model restructuring outcomes, and deliver actionable insights that preserve or create value for clients and investors.

Navigating an Inflection Point in Energy

The energy and renewables sector is at a crucial juncture. Traditional hydrocarbons continue to play a dominant role in global supply, yet governments, investors, and consumers are increasingly pressuring companies to shift toward low-carbon and renewable energy solutions. The sector also faces headwinds such as volatile commodity prices, global supply chain disruptions, rising interest rates, and evolving regulatory frameworks.

For private-capital-backed companies—many of which operate in highly competitive and capital-intensive niches—the stakes are particularly high. Without the right turnaround strategies, these companies risk losing competitiveness, eroding stakeholder confidence, or even facing insolvency. Accordion’s expanded leadership team is poised to address these challenges head-on.
