Eaton Invests in New SC Transformer Plant for Data Centers & Grid Upgrades
Eaton, a global leader in intelligent power management, is taking significant steps to address the growing demand for electrical power by investing $340 million in a new transformer manufacturing facility in Jonesville, South Carolina. This initiative aims to alleviate the critical shortage of transformers and meet the record-breaking demand for power solutions across various sectors, including utility, commercial, industrial, and data centers. The facility is expected to commence operations and hiring in 2027, supplementing Eaton’s existing transformer manufacturing capabilities in Wisconsin.
The decision to establish this new facility comes in response to an increasing need for electrical infrastructure that supports grid modernization, electrification, and industrial growth. “Electrical power demand is increasing dramatically, and our solutions are at the heart of energy systems everywhere, from the utility grid to industrials, data centers, buildings, and more,” said Mike Yelton, president of the Americas Region, Electrical Sector at Eaton. “We’re grateful for the strong collaboration and support in South Carolina, where we have a long history of manufacturing and innovation. Eaton is continuing to increase production and add jobs there and across the U.S. to support affordable, reliable, and clean energy.”
A Commitment to Energy Efficiency and Innovation
Eaton’s transformers are designed to meet the highest industry efficiency standards, providing customers with energy-saving solutions that reduce operational costs. With a legacy spanning over a century in transformer innovation and production, the company is repurposing an existing Jonesville facility into a state-of-the-art manufacturing hub dedicated to three-phase transformers. This project is bolstered by local, state, and federal economic development incentives and partnerships with workforce training programs such as readySC and regional educational institutions.
South Carolina leaders have welcomed Eaton’s investment, recognizing the impact on job creation and economic growth. Governor Henry McMaster expressed enthusiasm for the development, stating, “Eaton’s new operation in Union County, which will mean 700 new jobs for the local community, represents a major vote of confidence in South Carolina’s highly skilled, world-class workforce. This investment is a remarkable milestone for Eaton and Union County, and we celebrate the opportunities it will create throughout the state in the years ahead.”

Senator Lindsey Graham highlighted South Carolina’s manufacturing strengths: “South Carolina is a leader in manufacturing due to our talented workforce, quality of life, and business environment. I welcome Eaton’s investment in Union County, further ensuring our state remains at the forefront of grid modernization.”
Senator Tim Scott also welcomed the news, saying, “This is great news! Eaton’s investment and expansion will create more job opportunities for the community and stimulate our local economy. I am glad South Carolina continues to be a hotbed for economic growth and a leading force in energy!”
Economic and Industrial Impact
Congressman Ralph Norman emphasized South Carolina’s competitive business environment: “South Carolina continues to set the gold standard as a competitive, business-friendly state with a strong and growing workforce. I am thrilled that Eaton has chosen Union County for its expansion, and I look forward to the positive impact this investment will have in the years ahead.”
Union County Supervisor Phillip Russell expressed gratitude for Eaton’s decision, stating, “We are pleased to welcome Eaton to Union County and acknowledge their investment and the new job opportunities they are introducing. Their considerable investment highlights the confidence global companies like Eaton have in Union County’s capability to address their needs. On behalf of the county council, county staff, and our partners, we convey our congratulations and appreciation for Eaton’s commitment to Union County.”
Expanding Manufacturing Capabilities
Eaton will continue manufacturing three-phase transformers at its existing facilities in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Additionally, the company remains committed to producing single-phase, pole-mount, and pad-mount transformers at its facility in Nacogdoches, Texas. These strategic expansions across multiple states underscore Eaton’s commitment to bolstering the U.S. electrical grid and supporting the nation’s energy transition.
Since 2023, Eaton has invested more than $1 billion in its North American electrical manufacturing sector. These investments aim to enhance the supply of power distribution equipment, including transformers, voltage regulators, electrical assemblies such as switchgear, switchboards, and circuit breakers, as well as other essential infrastructure solutions.
Driving Sustainable Energy Solutions
Eaton’s mission goes beyond manufacturing; the company is dedicated to protecting the environment and improving quality of life through intelligent power management solutions. With products that serve data centers, utilities, industrial and commercial sectors, machine building, residential areas, aerospace, and mobility industries, Eaton is leading the charge toward a more electrified and digitalized future. By leveraging global electrification and digitalization trends, the company is accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources and addressing the world’s most urgent power management challenges.
Through sustainable business practices and innovation, Eaton is positioning itself as a critical player in building a resilient and efficient energy ecosystem. The investment in South Carolina is a testament to its commitment to job creation, economic development, and technological advancement in power solutions.
