ChargePoint, a leading provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging solutions, and the Colorado Energy Office have announced the completion of six new EV fast-charging corridors across Colorado. The project includes 33 DC fast-charging stations with over 80 charging ports, providing EV drivers with convenient charging options along major highways throughout the state. This initiative received $10 million in state funding, with an additional $2 million contributed by private and local government partners.
Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint, emphasized the importance of public-private partnerships in expanding the charging infrastructure, saying, “This project is a testament to the leadership we’re seeing at a state level to accelerate the development of a robust charging network for all EV drivers. Our collaboration with the Colorado Energy Office is ensuring that drivers can charge quickly and conveniently across the state.”
The project has significantly expanded the availability of DC fast chargers in Colorado. Prior to this initiative, only 40% of highway corridors were within 30 miles of a fast charger. Following the completion of this project, nearly 80% of highways are now within 30 miles of a fast charger. Ongoing investments, including those through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, will continue to enhance the state’s charging infrastructure. Colorado’s impressive performance in EV adoption – ranking first in the nation for market share of new electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles – means that these new charging stations will be in high demand from the outset.
Governor Jared Polis of Colorado stated, “Colorado is leading the nation in EV sales and making EV travel more affordable and convenient for everyone. Our growing network of charging stations gives EV owners the confidence to travel across the state, knowing that a quick charge is available, whether they’re running errands, commuting, or embarking on longer trips.”
Will Toor, Executive Director of the Colorado Energy Office, highlighted the significance of the partnership with ChargePoint in expanding the state’s public fast-charging network: “With easy access to charging along our major transportation routes, Coloradans can now drive electric vehicles across the state, from north to south and east to west. We’re grateful for ChargePoint’s contributions to making this a reality.”
The new charging stations are strategically located along key highways, including Highway 40, I-70, Highway 50, and Highway 550, as well as other important travel corridors. These stations are placed at convenient locations such as visitor centers and convenience stores, allowing drivers to charge while running errands or taking a break. Drivers can easily locate charging stations using the ChargePoint app or website.
