As part of its multi-energy strategy in Oman, TotalEnergies, in collaboration with OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE), has signed landmark agreements to develop 300 MW of renewable energy projects in the Sultanate. These projects will supply long-term renewable electricity to Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) through Power Purchase Agreements (PPA).
TotalEnergies and OQAE, holding 49% and 51% shares respectively, will oversee the development of three major renewable energy projects:
- North Solar: A 100 MW solar power project in Saih Nihaydah, northern Oman.
- Riyah-1 and Riyah-2: Two 100 MW wind power projects in Amin and West Nimr fields, southern Oman.
Construction is slated to begin in early 2025, with operations commencing by late 2026. Together, these projects are expected to produce over 1.4 TWh of renewable electricity annually.
Driving Oman’s Energy Transition
Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President of Renewables at TotalEnergies, highlighted the significance of the agreement:
“Building on our recent successes in Oman, such as the Marsa LNG project launched in April, we are thrilled to further advance our integrated multi-energy strategy in the region. Alongside OQAE, we look forward to bringing these projects to life, contributing to PDO’s renewable energy supply and supporting Oman’s energy transition.”
Dr. Aflah Al Hadhrami, Managing Director of PDO, emphasized the importance of these initiatives in achieving sustainability goals under Oman Vision 2040:
“These agreements reinforce our commitment to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 and diversifying energy sources. They build on PDO’s earlier milestones, including the Amin Solar IPP Power Plant and the Rima Water Treatment Project. Together, these projects reshape Oman’s energy landscape, blending innovation and environmental stewardship.”
OQAE’s Role as a Clean Energy Leader
Najla Zuhair Al Jamali, Chief Executive of OQAE, expressed pride in advancing Oman’s clean energy ambitions:
“Partnering with PDO and TotalEnergies, OQAE is committed to enabling the energy transition and driving sustainable economic growth. These projects reflect our focus on delivering innovative clean energy solutions and supporting Oman’s evolving industrial energy needs while promoting environmental sustainability.”
These renewable projects align with Oman’s Vision 2040 and PDO’s aim to source 30% of its power from renewable energy by 2026, marking a significant step in the nation’s journey toward a cleaner, more sustainable future.
