Eversource (NYSE: ES) has been honored with the “New York Project of the Year” award by Engineering News-Record (ENR) for its critical role in developing the onshore infrastructure for the South Fork Wind project, the first commercial-scale offshore wind initiative in the U.S.
This award highlights Eversource’s expertise in building onshore transmission systems that are essential for delivering clean, renewable energy to Northeast communities. The company’s efforts focused on installing the underground duct bank system and constructing the onshore substation in East Hampton, New York, for the South Fork Wind project.
“We’re incredibly proud of our involvement in the South Fork Wind project, which sets a new standard for offshore wind development in the U.S.,” said Bill Quinlan, Eversource President of Transmission and Offshore Wind Projects. “This achievement showcases the expertise of our team and the invaluable contribution of New York union labor, whose skills were key to this project’s success.”
Construction began in early 2022, starting with the onshore substation and the interconnection point at Beach Lane in East Hampton. Eversource partnered with Long Island’s Haugland Energy Group LLC to install the underground duct bank and build the onshore interconnection facility. The project created over 100 union jobs for Long Island’s skilled workforce. Other partners included LS Cable, Hawkeye, TRC, Hitachi, and Burns & McDonnell.
South Fork Wind also played a pivotal role in launching the U.S. offshore wind industry, with workers across the country contributing to the project. In Texas, more than 350 workers built the first offshore wind substation, while South Carolina produced the first American-made subsea cable, and New Orleans delivered the nation’s first offshore wind service operation vessel. Components were assembled in Connecticut and Rhode Island.
By May 2023, Eversource completed its onshore work, and later that year, the first turbine began generating power through the newly established transmission system. The project consists of 12 turbines, each with an 11MW capacity, powering approximately 70,000 homes in East Hampton.
Eversource, ranked as one of the top energy companies, is dedicated to delivering clean energy solutions to approximately 4.4 million customers across Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. The company continues to lead efforts in energy efficiency, renewable resources, and integrating innovative clean energy technologies such as solar, offshore wind, electric vehicles, and battery storage into the energy system.
