Cummins Inc. (NYSE: CMI) has officially reopened its renovated worldwide technical center hub office tower in Columbus, Indiana. Located at the Cummins Technical Center (CTC) on McKinley Avenue, the office tower had been largely untouched since it was first built in 1968, apart from minor updates and flood repairs. Now, with a fully modernized interior, the CTC office tower is ready to support greater collaboration and innovation among Cummins’ teams.
“This reopening is a major milestone for Cummins and our Destination Zero strategy,” said Jennifer Rumsey, Chair and CEO. “This hub is where much of our next-gen power solutions research begins, driven by our mission for a more sustainable future.”
The CTC, a notable mid-century design by Harry Weese, has been essential to Cummins’ growth and to Columbus’s economic development. Originally completed in 1968, it marked Cummins’ first dedicated technical center, adding 88 test cells that became vital for research and development.
In 2023, Cummins invested $1.4 billion in technology advancements, including its HELM™ platforms, which offer flexible, lower-emission solutions across various fuel types. These platforms, like the B, X10, and X15 engines, align with Cummins’ commitment to the energy transition and help fleets meet sustainability goals without compromising performance.
Tim Frazier, Vice President of Research & Technology, expressed gratitude for the employees’ patience throughout the renovation, noting that they can now work closely together in an optimized environment.
The six-story CTC tower provides 72,000 square feet across five floors, housing around 500 employees focused on research and development. The renovation, led by HOK of St. Louis with construction by Indianapolis-based F.A. Wilhelm Construction Co., includes key features such as new social hubs, gender-neutral restrooms, quiet spaces, and 90 varied-size conference rooms. Additionally, upgrades include improved lighting, functional window blinds, and treadmill desks, enhancing both productivity and comfort.
