Synthica Energy Partners with Archer Western for New San Antonio Waste-to-Energy Facility

Synthica Energy, a prominent developer of anaerobic digestion facilities that transform organic waste into renewable natural gas (RNG), has chosen Archer Western Construction as its construction partner for a new facility in San Antonio, Texas. Archer Western has received a limited Notice to Proceed for the project, which aims to process up to 250,000 tons of industrial organic waste annually, diverting it from landfills to produce renewable energy.

In the first quarter of 2024, Synthica conducted a Request for Proposals (RFP) to select qualified construction partners for the project’s detailed design phase. Archer Western was initially selected to provide preliminary services, including design support, cost estimating, value engineering, procurement assistance, and optimizing the construction schedule.

“Archer Western’s expertise during the pre-construction phase has been invaluable, enabling us to make critical design decisions that enhance the project’s value,” said Craig Thompson, Technical Project Director for Synthica Energy. “Their extensive experience in the water/wastewater sector and strong presence in the San Antonio market make them the ideal partner for this endeavor. We are eager to continue our collaboration into the construction phase, as their commitment to safety, quality, and professionalism aligns perfectly with our objectives.”

The San Antonio facility will utilize an advanced anaerobic digestion process to convert organic waste into biogas, which will be upgraded to RNG for injection into a nearby pipeline, helping to displace fossil fuel use. Synthica is also advancing another project near Atlanta, which broke ground earlier this month, and has a third facility under construction in Cincinnati, Ohio, set to become operational in 2025.

“We are thrilled to partner with Synthica Energy on their San Antonio organic waste-to-energy facility,” said Jeff Polak, VP of Archer Western Construction’s Water Division. “We look forward to collaborating to provide a cost-effective solution that diverts organic waste from local landfills and generates clean, renewable energy, benefiting both the local community and the environment.”
