Newmont Corporation’s Cadia mine in Orange, NSW, has achieved both The Copper Mark and The Molybdenum Mark, recognizing its responsible production practices as Australia’s largest underground mine. Cadia is Newmont’s first global site to earn these certifications, meeting over 30 criteria in environmental, social, and governance standards. This accomplishment makes Cadia the nation’s second-largest copper producer and the only Australian mine to receive The Molybdenum Mark.
Newmont’s Chief Safety and Sustainability Officer, Suzy Retallack, highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainable mining, noting the importance of responsible production and transparency. The Copper Mark certification enables customers to source copper from a mine independently verified for high environmental and social standards.
Additionally, Cadia powers half of its operations through a 15-year renewable Power Purchase Agreement with Rye Park Wind Farm. Over the past 18 months, Cadia has invested nearly $6 million AUD into local community projects, education, and infrastructure.
Michèle Brülhart, Executive Director of The Copper Mark, congratulated Cadia on becoming the third site in Australia to receive The Copper Mark and the first to receive The Molybdenum Mark. The Copper Mark promotes sustainable practices across the copper, molybdenum, nickel, and zinc industries. Located 25 km southwest of Orange, Cadia includes the Cadia East underground mine and the Ridgeway Mine, one of the world’s largest deposits of gold and copper.
