Ohmium Partners with SwitcH2 BV and BW Offshore for Floating Green Ammonia Plant

Ohmium International, a green hydrogen company specializing in the design, manufacture, and deployment of advanced Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer solutions, announced today that it has signed a Term Sheet with SwitcH2 BV, a renewable energy joint venture that includes BW Offshore, a leader in offshore production solutions. As part of the agreement, Ohmium will develop PEM electrolyzer solutions for a groundbreaking 300MW offshore floating green hydrogen and ammonia project led by SwitcH2.

The project, located off the coast of Southern Europe, will establish an industrial-scale floating green hydrogen and ammonia production facility, utilizing proven Floating Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) technology. Ohmium’s 300MW PEM electrolyzer systems will be installed aboard SwitcH2’s 268-meter FPSO vessel. Once operational, the facility will produce up to 55,000 tonnes of green hydrogen and nearly 300,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually—enough to fuel several oceangoing vessels for an entire year.

Ohmium’s PEM electrolyzers will be powered by nearshore solar and wind energy, along with treated seawater, to generate green hydrogen. The hydrogen will then be processed into ammonia via an onboard synthesis unit, with the ammonia being transferred to carriers for delivery to end users. With backing from the Dutch government and design approval from Norwegian certification agency DNV, the project aims to commence green ammonia production by 2029.

“We are excited to have Ohmium join us in bringing this pioneering project to life,” said Bob Rietveldt, Director and Co-Founder of SwitcH2. “Ohmium’s compact, modular PEM electrolyzers are perfectly suited for the space-constrained FPSO environment. Their high efficiency and standardized design allow for flexible, large-scale installation.”

Arne Ballantine, CEO of Ohmium, added, “We’re thrilled to be part of this transformative project. SwitcH2’s expertise in offshore floating production, combined with their innovative use of renewable energy and green hydrogen for ammonia synthesis, represents a significant step forward. The green ammonia market is set for exponential growth, particularly as a clean fuel for the global shipping industry, and we look forward to working with SwitcH2 to meet that demand.”
