Avangrid’s Clean Energy Plants Reduce Carbon Emissions by Over 23 Billion Pounds Annually

Avangrid, Inc. (NYSE: AGR), a prominent sustainable energy company and member of the Iberdrola Group, is generating substantial renewable energy from its wind, solar, and hydropower plants, effectively preventing billions of pounds of CO2 emissions from fossil fuel sources. As climate advocates gather in New York for Climate Week NYC, Avangrid proudly continues to supply clean, emissions-free energy to millions of homes and businesses across the nation.

“Climate change poses a global challenge that affects billions and will impact future generations for years to come,” stated Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid. “The urgency of climate change underscores the need for clean energy to power our society. I am proud of Avangrid’s leadership in the clean energy transition, with over 9.0 GW of renewable energy generation. We are committed to combating climate change by enhancing our grid to withstand severe weather events and integrating more renewable resources to deliver clean energy to American families and businesses.”

In the first eight months of 2024, Avangrid generated approximately 15,000 GWh of emissions-free energy. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, this achievement translates to:

  • Over 23 billion pounds of CO2 emissions avoided from fossil fuel generation.
  • Emissions equivalent to those from about 2.5 million gas-powered vehicles in one year.
  • The emissions from burning roughly 11.5 billion pounds of coal.

This reduction in CO2 emissions is akin to sequestering carbon equivalent to about 12 million acres of U.S. forest land or nurturing around 170 million tree seedlings for a decade.

Avangrid has set an ambitious carbon neutrality strategy aligned with Iberdrola’s Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) goal, aiming for carbon neutrality in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. The company is on track to achieve its target of 9.5 GW of emissions-free installed capacity by 2025.

“Our sustainability goals guide and strengthen our business,” said Laney Brown, Vice President of Sustainability at Avangrid. “Climate change affects everything, from future generations to global economies and the natural world. That’s why our goals—decreasing emissions, increasing electrification, and reinforcing our power grid—are fundamental to our mission. We aim to build a healthier world and best serve our customers and communities.”

Avangrid remains dedicated to a brighter future, continuously evolving its commitments to a just and equitable clean energy transition while meeting the needs of customers and communities today and ensuring the well-being of future generations.
