Pinnacle West Reports Higher Q3 2026 Earnings as Arizona Electricity Demand Reaches Record Levels
Pinnacle West Capital Corp. (NYSE: PNW) has reported higher consolidated earnings for the third quarter of 2026, supported by increased electricity sales, stronger customer usage, favorable weather conditions and continued customer growth across Arizona. The company also highlighted its ongoing investments in grid infrastructure, efforts to maintain reliable electricity service and initiatives aimed at protecting customer affordability as the state experiences significant economic and population growth.
Pinnacle West reported consolidated net income attributable to common shareholders of $434.2 million, or $3.49 per diluted share, for the third quarter of 2026. This represents an increase compared with the $413.2 million, or $3.39 per diluted share, recorded during the corresponding quarter of 2025.
The approximately $21 million improvement in quarterly earnings primarily reflected higher customer electricity sales and usage, favorable weather-related impacts compared with the previous year and continued customer additions. These positive contributions were partially offset by increased depreciation and amortization expenses, along with higher interest charges.
Pinnacle West Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Ted Geisler said Arizona’s rapid economic and population expansion requires continued attention to electricity reliability, affordability and infrastructure development. He emphasized that the company remains focused on delivering dependable energy while ensuring that new economic development does not create additional financial burdens for existing residential and business customers.
Geisler also recognized the work of APS employees during the summer period, noting that long-term resource planning, infrastructure investments and employee dedication helped the company meet substantial electricity demand while maintaining reliable service. The company also continued efforts to return savings to customers and prepare the electricity system for future requirements.
Record Electricity Demand Highlights Arizona’s Growth
Arizona Public Service (APS), Pinnacle West’s principal utility subsidiary, experienced strong electricity demand throughout the third quarter of 2026 as commercial activity, industrial expansion and residential growth continued across its service territory.
Commercial and industrial electricity sales increased 14.5% compared with the same quarter in 2025, while residential sales grew 4.5%. Combined, these increases contributed to overall weather-normalized electricity sales growth of 9.5%, reflecting the expanding energy requirements of Arizona’s economy.
APS customers established a new all-time peak electricity demand record of 9,166 megawatts (MW) on August 2, 2026. Electricity demand exceeded 9,000 MW on three separate occasions during the quarter. The utility also surpassed its previous peak demand record of 8,648 MW, established in 2025, on 12 occasions.
The latest record represents the fourth consecutive year in which APS has experienced a new summer peak demand milestone. The company attributed its ability to serve these increasing requirements to long-term electricity resource planning, proactive maintenance activities and customer-focused demand management initiatives.
Weather conditions also contributed to higher electricity consumption during the reporting period. Arizona experienced a substantially warmer-than-normal quarter, with residential cooling degree days increasing 3% compared with the third quarter of 2025. The period also included one of the more active monsoon seasons in recent years.
Alongside increased electricity consumption, APS continued to experience customer growth. Its overall customer base expanded 1.8%, including residential customer growth of 1.9%. These developments demonstrate the growing requirement for electricity infrastructure capable of supporting additional households, commercial facilities and industrial operations.
Long-Term Planning to Support Future Energy Requirements
Pinnacle West expects Arizona’s electricity requirements to increase significantly over the coming years. According to Geisler, customers’ annual electricity needs are projected to more than double by 2041, while peak electricity demand is expected to increase by more than 5,000 MW compared with current levels.
To prepare for these anticipated requirements, APS recently submitted its Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) to the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC). The filing outlines the resources and infrastructure investments required to serve customers over the next 15 years.
The proposed resource strategy includes a diversified combination of electricity generation resources and transmission investments intended to support system reliability, maintain customer affordability and provide flexibility as demand increases. The planning process is designed to address the needs of one of the fastest-growing regions in the United States while preparing the utility for changing energy consumption patterns.
Pinnacle West also emphasized that infrastructure expansion must be managed responsibly. The company wants new economic development to strengthen the electricity network without transferring unnecessary costs to existing residential and commercial customers.
Responsible Energy Growth Pledge
As part of its approach to managing Arizona’s expanding energy requirements, Geisler reiterated Pinnacle West’s Pledge for Responsible Energy Growth. The initiative is based on three central principles: maintaining electricity system reliability, protecting customer rates and preserving sufficient capacity for Arizona’s homes, businesses and communities.
Geisler explained that companies establishing large electricity-consuming operations in Arizona should be responsible for funding the infrastructure necessary to serve their additional energy requirements. This approach is intended to ensure that new investments contribute toward shared grid costs rather than placing the financial responsibility entirely on existing customers.
Under the pledge, APS will not connect new extra-large electricity customers more quickly than the grid can reliably accommodate. These customers will be required to fund the costs associated with serving their additional demand. The utility will also maintain adequate capacity to meet the electricity requirements of existing customers and future developments.
The company said these principles are incorporated into agreements with extra-large energy users. The objective is to balance economic development with dependable electricity service and customer protection.
Geisler stressed that responsible expansion should allow Arizona to attract data centers, manufacturers and other major businesses while ensuring that existing customers continue to receive reliable electricity at affordable rates.
Customer Bill Credits and Financial Assistance
Alongside infrastructure development and resource planning, Pinnacle West continues to prioritize customer affordability through financial support programs.
Beginning in November 2026, APS is providing more than $33 million in customer bill credits following approval from the Arizona Corporation Commission. The credits are being applied automatically through the Environmental Benefits Surcharge.
A typical residential customer is expected to receive approximately $14 in savings on the November electricity bill. Business customers will also benefit from the program, with credit amounts determined by their electricity consumption.
The funding comes partly from revenue generated through APS’s Green Power Partners program. By returning these benefits directly to customers, the utility aims to support household and business affordability while continuing its renewable energy initiatives.
In addition to the bill credits, APS is making another $5 million available to assist customers experiencing financial hardship. This assistance is being funded directly by Pinnacle West rather than through customer electricity rates.
Geisler said the company considers affordable and reliable electricity essential to Arizona’s continued development. He noted that returning financial benefits to customers demonstrates how the utility can support economic growth while providing direct value to the communities it serves.
Continued Investment in Arizona’s Energy Infrastructure
Pinnacle West’s third-quarter 2026 results reflect the relationship between Arizona’s economic expansion, increasing electricity consumption and the need for long-term utility investment.
With commercial and industrial sales rising, residential customers increasing and summer peak demand reaching another record, APS faces growing requirements for generation resources, transmission infrastructure and distribution system capacity.
The company’s Integrated Resource Plan, responsible growth commitments and customer assistance initiatives form part of its broader strategy for addressing these challenges.
Pinnacle West said it remains committed to providing safe, reliable and affordable electricity while supporting Arizona’s future energy requirements. Through infrastructure planning, responsible customer agreements and financial assistance programs, the company aims to accommodate continued development while maintaining dependable service and protecting customers from unnecessary costs.
