TotalEnergies Joins Partners to Reduce Methane Emissions

TotalEnergies Strengthens Global Partnerships to Reduce Methane Emissions

TotalEnergies is expanding its international cooperation with national oil and gas companies to accelerate efforts to detect, measure, monitor and reduce methane emissions across the energy industry. The company highlighted its partnerships with PETRONAS in Malaysia, SONANGOL in Angola and Oil India Limited (OIL) in India during a meeting of Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter (OGDC) member companies in Abu Dhabi.

Through these collaborations, TotalEnergies aims to share technical expertise, advanced methane detection technologies and operational best practices with its international partners. The initiatives are designed to strengthen methane emissions monitoring, improve measurement accuracy and support practical emissions reduction solutions across upstream oil and gas operations.

Methane reduction has become an important priority for the global energy sector because of its contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. By working with national oil companies, TotalEnergies intends to encourage wider adoption of effective monitoring technologies and support industry efforts to achieve near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030.

The three partnerships cover technology evaluation, technical knowledge sharing, field measurement campaigns and broader decarbonization initiatives. Each collaboration addresses specific operational requirements while contributing to the shared objective of reducing methane emissions throughout the oil and gas value chain.

Developing a Regional Methane Technology Evaluation Center with PETRONAS

In Southeast Asia, TotalEnergies has signed a collaboration agreement with PETRONAS, the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) and JGC Corporation to support the development of the Southeast Asia Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Center, known as SEA METEC.

Led by PETRONAS, SEA METEC will be established in Malaysia as a regional center dedicated to evaluating methane emissions measurement and monitoring technologies. The facility is intended to serve companies across Southeast Asia by providing opportunities to assess the performance and effectiveness of different methane detection and quantification solutions.

TotalEnergies will contribute technical knowledge and experience developed through more than a decade of work at its TotalEnergies Anomalies Detection Initiative (TADI) center. The facility is recognized as Europe’s only center dedicated to evaluating technologies used for methane detection and quantification.

Through this experience, TotalEnergies will support the development of SEA METEC’s technical capabilities and contribute to the evaluation of technologies that can help energy companies identify methane emissions more effectively.

The collaboration will also encourage knowledge sharing among participating organizations and support greater harmonization of methane emissions measurement and quantification methodologies. Consistent measurement approaches are important for improving the reliability and comparability of emissions data across different companies, facilities and operating environments.

By establishing a regional technology evaluation center, the partners aim to help Southeast Asian energy companies make more informed decisions when selecting methane monitoring technologies. Improved access to reliable measurement solutions can strengthen emissions reporting and enable operators to identify emission sources and implement appropriate corrective measures.

The initiative also reflects the importance of cooperation between international energy companies, national oil companies and technology organizations in advancing practical solutions for methane reduction.

Strengthening Methane Reduction Cooperation with SONANGOL in Angola

In Angola, TotalEnergies has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SONANGOL to expand technical cooperation on methane emissions reduction and wider decarbonization solutions.

The agreement builds on experience gained through the AUSEA technology and establishes a framework for cooperation in methane emissions detection, measurement, monitoring and reduction. It also includes the exchange of technical expertise, operational methodologies and best practices between the two companies.

The partnership will focus on identifying practical opportunities to reduce methane emissions and gas flaring across relevant operations. Both companies will also explore measures to improve energy efficiency and support the electrification of industrial facilities.

In addition, the cooperation covers carbon management solutions and greenhouse gas emissions reporting. These areas are important for improving operational performance, strengthening environmental monitoring and supporting the development of more comprehensive decarbonization strategies.

Technical training and knowledge sharing will form another important part of the partnership. By exchanging experience and operational information, TotalEnergies and SONANGOL aim to strengthen technical capabilities and improve the implementation of methane reduction measures in Angola’s oil and gas industry.

The companies will also explore potential financing opportunities to support their decarbonization objectives. This includes examining possible assistance from the World Bank’s Global Flaring and Methane Reduction (GFMR) Fund.

The financing component could help identify opportunities to advance projects focused on reducing routine gas flaring and methane emissions. Access to appropriate funding mechanisms can be important for implementing technical improvements, particularly where infrastructure upgrades and additional monitoring systems are required.

Through this agreement, TotalEnergies and SONANGOL intend to combine their operational experience and technical resources to identify solutions that support emissions reduction while improving the efficiency of energy operations.

Expanding Methane Detection Activities with Oil India Limited

In India, TotalEnergies and Oil India Limited are strengthening their cooperation through a second field campaign using the company’s AUSEA technology.

The expanded initiative follows the successful completion of an initial methane detection campaign covering more than 20 OIL-operated sites in Assam. The first campaign lasted one month and provided Oil India with important data to support its greenhouse gas emissions reporting activities.

The campaign also demonstrated the ability of AUSEA technology to detect and quantify methane emissions accurately across different operating locations and field conditions.

Building on these results, the second one-month campaign will extend methane detection activities to additional Oil India-operated sites. The initiative is expected to provide further information about methane emissions across OIL’s operations and strengthen the company’s ability to identify potential emission sources.

Accurate detection and quantification are essential steps in developing effective methane reduction strategies. Reliable field measurements allow operators to better understand emissions, prioritize areas requiring attention and evaluate the effectiveness of corrective actions.

The continued cooperation between TotalEnergies and Oil India demonstrates the importance of technology partnerships in supporting emissions monitoring across India’s oil and gas sector.

By expanding the use of AUSEA technology, the companies aim to improve access to detailed methane emissions data and strengthen their technical cooperation on environmental performance.

The second campaign will also build on the experience gained during the initial fieldwork, supporting continued knowledge exchange and the application of advanced methane measurement technologies in different operational environments.

Supporting the OGDC’s 2030 Methane Ambition

TotalEnergies’ partnerships with PETRONAS, SONANGOL and Oil India form part of its broader commitment to the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter. The three initiatives demonstrate how international cooperation can support the development and deployment of technologies and operational practices needed to reduce methane emissions.

The collaborations address different aspects of the methane reduction challenge. SEA METEC will focus on regional technology evaluation and measurement standards, the SONANGOL agreement will support technical cooperation and broader decarbonization activities, while the Oil India partnership will expand practical methane detection through field campaigns.

Commenting on the partnerships, Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of TotalEnergies, said the company’s cooperation with PETRONAS in Malaysia, SONANGOL in Angola and Oil India in India demonstrates its commitment to the OGDC and the momentum generated among international and national energy companies.

He emphasized that sharing technologies, expertise and best practices can accelerate practical action across the industry and contribute to the common ambition of achieving near-zero upstream methane emissions by 2030.

The initiatives highlight TotalEnergies’ approach of combining technical innovation with partnerships to address methane emissions across different geographical regions. By supporting technology evaluation, strengthening operational capabilities and expanding field measurement activities, the company aims to help its partners improve emissions monitoring and implement more effective reduction measures.

As the global oil and gas industry continues to advance its decarbonization efforts, cooperation between international energy companies and national operators will remain important. TotalEnergies’ work with PETRONAS, SONANGOL and Oil India illustrates how shared technical resources and practical solutions can contribute to measurable progress toward the industry’s methane reduction objectives.
