BP Announces Gas and Condensate Discovery Offshore Egypt with Fast-Track Development Potential
Global energy company BP has announced a significant gas and condensate discovery offshore Egypt following the successful drilling of the Denise W-1 exploration well in the Temsah Concession in the Eastern Mediterranean. The new discovery highlights the continued hydrocarbon potential of the region and reinforces Egypt’s strategic role as a key natural gas producer in the Mediterranean basin.
The Denise W-1 well was drilled in the Temsah Concession, a well-established offshore gas production area that has been actively explored and developed for decades. The concession lies approximately 70 kilometres offshore Egypt in water depths of around 95 metres. Importantly, the discovery is located less than 10 kilometres from existing production infrastructure, creating a strong opportunity for rapid development and efficient integration with nearby facilities.
Strategic Location Supports Fast-Track Development
One of the most significant aspects of the Denise W discovery is its proximity to existing offshore infrastructure. Being located near established production hubs means that development timelines could be significantly shortened compared to projects that require the construction of entirely new infrastructure. Partnership Structure and Concession Framework
The Denise W-1 well is located within the Temsah Concession, which operates under a joint venture partnership between several energy companies and Egyptian state entities. bp holds a 50 percent working interest in the concession, while Eni holds the remaining 50 percent stake and serves as the operator of the Denise Development Lease.
Operations are conducted through Petrobel, a long-standing joint venture between Eni and the Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC). Petrobel has extensive experience operating offshore fields in Egypt, particularly within the Mediterranean region.
The discovery follows a binding head of agreement signed in July 2025 between bp, EGPC, and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS). The agreement secured a 20-year renewal of the Temsah Concession, providing long-term operational certainty and encouraging continued exploration and development activity in the area.
This renewed concession framework enables the partners to pursue further exploration opportunities while continuing to maximize the value of existing infrastructure and resources.
Expanding Exploration Activity Offshore Egypt
The Denise W discovery forms part of a broader strategy by bp to expand exploration activities offshore Egypt and reinforce its position as a major contributor to the country’s natural gas sector.
Earlier in the year, bp was awarded two additional offshore exploration concessions located near existing infrastructure in the Mediterranean. These include the North‑East El Alamein Offshore Block, which is operated and fully owned by bp, and the West El Hammad Offshore Block, where bp holds a 25 percent stake alongside operator Eni with 75 percent ownership.
Both blocks are strategically located near existing production and transport infrastructure, which could facilitate rapid development if commercially viable discoveries are made.
In addition to exploration expansion, bp has also strengthened its drilling campaign in Egyptian waters. The company recently mobilized the drilling rig DS-12 to support an extensive drilling program targeting complex deepwater environments. The campaign includes five firm wells and three optional wells designed to evaluate additional gas resources and increase domestic supply.
This drilling effort is particularly important as Egypt seeks to maintain and expand its natural gas production to meet rising domestic energy demand while supporting export opportunities through regional gas networks.
Expanding Into the Red Sea Frontier
Beyond the Mediterranean, bp is also expanding exploration activities into new geological frontiers within Egypt. The company recently signed an agreement with South Valley Egyptian Petroleum Holding Company for the award of Block 6 in the Red Sea.
The Red Sea region remains relatively underexplored compared to Egypt’s Mediterranean offshore basins. However, it is considered a promising frontier for future hydrocarbon discoveries. Geological studies suggest that the basin may contain significant oil and gas resources that have yet to be fully assessed.
By securing acreage in this emerging exploration province, bp is positioning itself to participate in potential future discoveries that could further diversify Egypt’s hydrocarbon resource base.
Long-Term Commitment to Egypt’s Energy Sector
The latest discovery reinforces bp’s long-standing commitment to Egypt’s energy industry. The company has operated in the country for more than 63 years and has played a major role in developing offshore gas fields that supply both domestic markets and regional export infrastructure.
