Aetherflux, the orbital energy infrastructure company founded by Baiju Bhatt, has announced the appointment of Matthew Seaford to its Advisory Board. The move comes as the company intensifies efforts to develop a groundbreaking energy system designed to operate beyond Earth’s atmosphere—an orbital power grid that could transform how energy is generated, distributed, and consumed both in space and on the ground.

Seaford joins the advisory team at a pivotal moment for the company. Aetherflux recently revealed plans for its first orbital data center project, which is expected to launch in the first quarter of 2027. This milestone represents a major step forward in the company’s long-term vision of building infrastructure in space capable of capturing energy and distributing it efficiently to support global power needs and emerging computing demands.

Strategic Expertise at a Critical Stage

The appointment of Seaford is intended to strengthen Aetherflux’s strategic capabilities as it enters a period of rapid development and expansion. Over the course of his career, Seaford has played a significant role in shaping major technology and national security initiatives in the United States, overseeing complex projects involving semiconductor manufacturing, advanced research programs, and defense technology systems.

Most recently, Seaford served as Technical Director for the Directorate of Science and Technology at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). In that role, he helped lead advanced research and development initiatives designed to support intelligence and defense missions. His work involved coordinating cutting-edge technologies and ensuring that innovative systems could be translated into real-world capabilities that strengthen national security.

In addition to his role at the CIA, Seaford previously served as Director of the Portfolio Management Office at the U.S. Department of Commerce’s CHIPS Program Office. There, he was responsible for overseeing a portfolio of semiconductor projects valued at approximately $39 billion. The CHIPS Program is part of a major U.S. government effort to expand domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity and reduce reliance on overseas supply chains for critical technologies.

Experience in Semiconductor and Defense Programs

Earlier in his career, Seaford also served as National Security Advisor for the CHIPS Program. In this capacity, he played a key role in integrating national security considerations into U.S. semiconductor policy and ensuring that emerging manufacturing investments supported both economic growth and defense readiness.

He also held a senior leadership role as Deputy Director of the Defense Production Act Title III Program within the Office of the Secretary of Defense at the U.S. Department of Defense. The Defense Production Act Title III Program focuses on strengthening the domestic industrial base by supporting the development of critical technologies and manufacturing capabilities that are essential for national security.

These experiences have given Seaford a deep understanding of how emerging technologies, advanced manufacturing, and government programs intersect—knowledge that Aetherflux believes will be invaluable as the company builds infrastructure that could play a role in both commercial and strategic applications.

Leadership Across the Technology Ecosystem

Beyond his government service, Seaford has remained deeply involved in the technology sector through leadership roles in advisory and strategic consulting organizations.

He is the founder and chief executive officer of Manufacturing Legislative Services, a strategic advisory firm that works with technology companies navigating complex regulatory and policy environments. The firm focuses on helping organizations understand how legislation, industrial policy, and national security priorities shape the development and commercialization of emerging technologies.

Seaford also serves as Senior Vice President for National Security Programs at Applied Research Institute (ARI), where he contributes to initiatives designed to bridge the gap between scientific research and national defense applications.

In addition to these roles, he sits on the advisory boards of several technology companies, including Applied Energetics, FemtoMetrix, and Akash Systems. These organizations are involved in fields ranging from advanced energy systems to semiconductor technologies and next-generation electronics.

Supporting Aetherflux’s Vision for Space-Based Energy

Aetherflux is pursuing an ambitious goal: creating the first American power grid in space. The concept involves capturing solar energy in orbit and transmitting that energy to locations where it is needed—either back to Earth or directly to infrastructure operating in space.

This approach could provide several advantages compared with traditional terrestrial power systems. Solar energy captured in space is not affected by weather patterns or the day-night cycle, allowing for more consistent energy generation. Additionally, energy transmitted from orbit could potentially reach remote or contested regions where building traditional infrastructure is difficult.

According to Bhatt, Seaford’s extensive experience in large-scale technology programs and industrial strategy will help guide Aetherflux as it works to turn these concepts into operational systems.

AI computing has grown dramatically in recent years, placing enormous pressure on energy infrastructure and data center capacity. Building new facilities on Earth often requires years of planning, regulatory approvals, and construction—leading to timelines that can stretch from five to eight years before operations begin.

Aetherflux believes that orbital infrastructure could provide a faster and more flexible alternative. By placing data centers in space and powering them with energy captured in orbit, the company aims to bypass many of the constraints associated with terrestrial infrastructure development.

This concept could also support new applications in areas such as satellite operations, defense systems, and space-based communications networks.
