NHOA Energy, a global provider of industrial-scale energy storage solutions, has officially launched a 245 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project at the Hallett Power Station site in South Australia. The announcement marks the project’s financial close and transition into the construction and delivery phase, representing a significant milestone for the partners involved and for the region’s energy transition.

The project is being delivered in collaboration with EnergyAustralia and Enerven, with a formal ceremony held at the Hallett Power Station near the town of Canowie. The event was attended by representatives from the companies involved, as well as government officials, traditional landowners, and local community stakeholders.

First Phase of a Larger Energy Hub

Owned and developed by EnergyAustralia, the Hallett BESS is being constructed adjacent to the existing Hallett gas-fired power station. The battery installation represents the first stage of a broader development plan for the site, which is expected to evolve into a more flexible and resilient energy hub over time.

As the delivery partner for Phase 1, NHOA Energy will supply a battery energy storage system with a guaranteed usable capacity of 245 MWh. The system will operate at 50 MW and is designed to deliver up to five hours of energy storage at the start of its operational life.

Grid-Forming Technology for Stability

The Hallett battery is being designed as a grid-forming system, capable of delivering critical stability services to the National Electricity Market (NEM). These services include frequency control, grid support, and energy arbitrage, as well as participation in various market-based grid services.

By providing fast-responding energy storage and grid-support capabilities, the project is expected to enhance the resilience of South Australia’s electricity system while enabling higher levels of renewable energy integration.

A key advantage of the Hallett BESS is its co-location with the existing power station infrastructure. This approach reduces the need for new transmission assets, minimizes environmental impact, and accelerates project timelines.

The integration of the battery with the existing generation assets will be managed using NHOA Energy’s proprietary PROPHET control platform, designed to ensure safe, reliable, and coordinated operation across the site.

Backed by Federal Investment Framework

The project has also received support from the Australian government through its Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS). The program is intended to lower investment risks and accelerate the deployment of clean, dispatchable energy capacity, including large-scale battery systems.

Daniel Nugent, Chief Commercial and Transition Officer at EnergyAustralia, said the project demonstrates how existing infrastructure can be leveraged to strengthen the grid while supporting local employment.

By building the battery in Hallett, we are utilizing existing infrastructure, which supports local employment and strengthens South Australia’s electricity grid,” Nugent said. “Financial close means this project is real, funded, and under construction, and we are now fully focused on its rigorous execution and delivery.”

Timeline and Commissioning

Construction and system delivery are now underway, with commissioning expected to begin in January 2027 following the completion of development, installation, and testing phases.

Once operational, the Hallett battery is expected to play a central role in improving grid reliability, reducing reliance on fossil-fuel peaking plants, and supporting the broader transition to renewable energy across South Australia and the National Electricity Market.
